Price increases

We know that increasing prices is never an easy thing to talk about, and it’s something we try to do as infrequently as possible - the last time was 3 years ago and before that, it was back in 2013, so two price increases in 11 years. Monetary inflation alone is over 15% since 2021 and we could write an entire news post about how we’re using the money to improve all of our products but to keep things simple here are the big ticket items:

  • We have donated $8 million USD to mod authors, and we’re currently adding more than $10,000 per day to that fund.
  • We now have over 30 staff working at Nexus Mods, including the app team working on the future of open-source mod management and our community team which has grown by 3x. We are actively recruiting for our community team.
  • We have increased our server and CDN infrastructure capabilities to many multiples of where they were 3 years ago to deal with the increased demand and are continuing to do so as our traffic increases. We have just this week signed off on purchasing another 30x16TB NVME drives for our own CDN nodes and increasing their network capacity to 80Gb/sec per node to keep up with demand. During our most recent peak following the release of the Fallout series we moved more than 2.5PB in 24 hours at an average speed of around 225Gb/sec, and this would have been even higher if we weren’t maxing out every 10G network port that we had available!
  • Keeping the website and API online now requires infrastructure that spans over 700 CPUs and 5TB of memory to help serve around 4,000 incoming web requests per second at peak times. Over the entire nexusmods.com domain we serve 1 billion requests per day.

The current price of a subscription is £4.99 (~$6.50) plus taxes monthly and £49.99 (~$65) plus taxes yearly. The new prices, excluding taxes, are listed below - these come into effect on 17 June 2024.

Monthly
USD $8.99 plus tax
GBP £7.19 plus tax
EUR €8.39 plus tax

Annual
USD $89.99 plus tax
GBP £71.99 plus tax
EUR €83.99 plus tax

For new subscriptions, your currency will match your location, and for currencies not listed above the price will be calculated from the USD value into your currency where possible.

For existing subscriptions, we will keep them on £ GBP as they are now, but as soon as the new system is live you will be able to switch to your local currency if you wish to. We will notify and email all subscribers with more information when this is available.

Global Taxes, payment methods and currencies

We currently use Braintree and Paypal to bill all premium subscriptions in £ GBP - we collect taxes for all European countries and the UK and pay them to the relevant government. The online landscape has evolved over the last few years and we are now at the stage where we need to collect taxes on a global level.

To achieve this, as of 17 June 2024 all new subscriptions will be billed using a new payment provider - Paddle, which means:

  • We can offer a greater option of payment methods than Braintree.
  • Paypal and card payments are still a fully supported payment option.
  • Billing can be offered in local currency for many countries including USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, AUD, NZD and many others. Converted pricing will be based on the USD price.
  • Where applicable, local taxes will be applied to new memberships.
  • Your card statement will say something like “Paddle - Nexus Mods” next to the payment.
  • PayPal payments will appear on your bank/card statement as: PAYPAL *PADDLE.NET with more information available on the PayPal website.

After this new provider is launched and working with new subscriptions we will be working on moving over existing subscriptions, with the aim to have everything migrated by 1 October 2024, but we will be in touch with subscribers via email nearer the time. If you’re a current subscriber then here are a few things to note:

  • Depending on your location you may have taxes added to your subscription.
  • We’re not going to be able to migrate any subscriptions using Google/Android Pay, but you will be able to still use Google/Android Pay to re-subscribe after the migration. We will contact all Google/Android Pay subscribers with more information about this.
  • We’re not going to change your currency automatically, but we will let you know when the system is ready and you’ll be able to change to your local currency if you want to.
  • In a small number of cases we may not be able to migrate your subscription, but we will keep you informed if that is the case and resubscribing will be easy.

The Nexus Mods Premium Subscription is taxable as Software as a Service ( SaaS ) which is already taxable everywhere in the UK and the EU. Specific information for the US can be found here. For other locations please see your Government or Region’s website.

Cancellations and thanks

As always you are welcome to cancel your subscription at any time before or after these billing changes - we have made that process as easy as possible here.

Lastly, I’d like to thank all of our premium subscribers for their support over the years - the website wouldn’t exist without you - it’s through your subscriptions that we can continue to invest into the modding community and reward authors for the amazing creations they make for all of our favourite games.
