CD Projekt RED will be attending this years Gamescom which takes place in Cologne, Germany next week. We will be hosting a series of behind closed doors, exclusive media presentations where we will be showing the REDkit, a long-awaited set of tools for modders which will allow any player to create their own content for the PC version of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, such as new, non-linear adventures, great looking locations and much more.
So more information due after Gamescon next week.
In addition to this, Rock, Paper, Shotgun followed up on the topic asking whether The Witcher 2 would make use of Steam Workshop:
At this point I can tell you that we’re concentrating on the tool as such, so no Steam mention at this point,” a rep told me. Meanwhile, the rep added that CDP’s mainly looking to attract “the best modders out there"
Which suggests that the tools are not going to be super user friendly.
As for Steam Workshop; The Witcher 2 is not a Steamworks game. Steam Workshop works well for Skryim, Portal, etc. because every legitimate player of the game has to use Steam in order to play the game. Steam Workshop is tied to this system, so if you don't own the game on Steam you cannot download from Steam Workshop. The Witcher 2 is not a Steamworks game. In fact, CDProjekt in their awesomeness provided every one who bought the game with a link to a DRM-free copy from GOG. If you tie a game that doesn't use Steamworks with Steam Workshop for modding, then only those people who bought the game through Steam can download the mods from Steam Workshop (unless Valve change the system, of course).
While choice and variety of modding locations is no doubt a good thing, limiting modding to only people who bought the game from a particular service or platform obviously isn't. Modding should be free and open for everybody.
More information soon!
