Howdy!

Welcome to Portraits of the Rim, a dynamic portrait generation mod!

Penny Painter has one humble goal - to paint every face on the Rim. In order to accomplish this seemingly impossible task, 4000+ assets have been drawn (650+ are unique faces based on gender, age, and traits), placed over 30+ layers compiled for your viewing pleasure. Even without clothing, scars, or hair and just using baseliners, the mod creates 26,400 unique pawns. With hair, clothing, injuries and augments, you'll be hard-pressed to find a repeat portrait without trying.

Located as a picture in the Gear tab, Portraits of the Rim showcases the stories of your colonists starting from age 7. It's dynamic, meaning that as your colonists age, get injured and augmented, change their hair, style, and clothes over their time on the Rim, you'll get to see those changes!

It also shows the faces of those visiting your colony as well as those who give you quests/missions.

And that's pretty much it! Right now, it contains assets for the basegame and DLC as well as Vanilla Expanded. Plans are to include more mods, it just takes time! Ultimately, the goal is for Penny to see every face on the Rim, and that means many, many mods to include and many, many updates.

A quick note, while it isn't required, some kind of character editor would probably be helpful to use in case you aren't a fan of how a pawn's portrait is turning out.

  • Clipping
There's going to be weird clipping, especially for hair and certain hats. If you come across them, please let me know! Easiest way is through the discussions below. I'll do my best to make textures fit better, but some of them might just be ill-fitting. I'm just gonna chalk it up to that not all hair styles work with all hats.
  • Missing Textures
Does it seem like something is missing? Let me know! Reminder that the mod currently works for vanilla and then Vanilla Expanded up through the Phytokin mod. Also, hairs that share names with vanilla and Vanilla Expanded have missing assets. I'm looking into it.
  • Genetic Eye Color
I'm working on this, so I'm hoping to fix it in a future update, but it's gonna take a little art trickery to get that working.
  • When are you going to add in my favorite mod?
Eventually. Hopefully sooner rather than later. If you want to have a say in what I work on next, you can always become a patron on my Patreon (see below)
  • Is this compatible with pre-existing saves?
I didn't test it a ton, but to the best of my knowledge, yes?
  • Can I hide injuries?
Totally. Not everyone wants to see missing face pieces, so there's a toggleable option in the Mod Options page to replace injuries with bandages.
  • Is this an NFT?
Okay. TL;DR - no, and I have no interest in making it into one.

Longer answer: I get that this can be used for a buuunch of things outside of Rimworld. While I made this mod with the intent of it staying firmly in the Rimworld community for free, I also understand that it's out in the public space of the internet. I ask that you respect the effort that I have put into this (basically a year of my life and 600+ hours of work) and not take the assets without my permission first.

  • Can I use a portrait screenshot for my social media avatar/fanfiction/fanart?
Reach out to me and ask first, please. As a rule of thumb, I don't really care as long as I'm credited and it's not used for monetary gain, but still ask. If you want to use it for something that feels like it's in a grey-area and may later be used for financial gain, just reach out and ask once again. Basically, just don't be a jerk, don't steal/plaigarize my work, and credit where you can after asking <3
  • Can I share my zany colonist portrait on Reddit/Twitter?
Sure. Just be sure to credit the mod.
  • This asset doesn't look like I thought it would in-game.
Fair enough. I tried my best, but some of them aren't exactly what was described.
  • Can I make my own assets in my own style and share them?
Heck yeah! I love the idea of other art styles being used in the game. I'm going to work on making a walkthrough on how to make the assets, but don't have one made yet. I'll share it once I have it done, however. Just be sure to always credit any art assets you use that come from my end, and to credit Taranchuk for the code.
  • Why aren't there faces for beauty traits and sexuality?
Great question. I didn't like the idea of being the arbiter of what is a "pretty" or "ugly", so I didn't draw them. Similarly with sexuality, it felt weird making a "gay" or "asexual" face since, like, that's not actually a thing, and I'm not a fan of the implications about gender, sexual identity and physical appearance that would create.
  • Is that a Jojo reference?
    Good grief.
