WHAT IS THIS MOD?
This project originally began as a fix to all of the misgendering suffered by lesbian Frey in the old gender swap structure (and unfortunately, this work began several months before MysticElodie released their mod; by the time I found out about their work, I was far too deep into my own to halt it).
It has since expanded into a larger-scale "refresh," if you will, of much of Frey's spoken dialogue. This predominantly manifests in the romance scenarios, but also includes a large swath of dialogue spread out throughout the rest of the game, as well. This includes main story, town events, standard town NPC interactions, and even the Mr. Owl Board.
This mod assumes Frey is fully homosexual.
Current features are:
- Fixed all misgendering for Frey. This includes the prologue and everything associated with Frey's child. As a result, the mod fully assumes the user is playing Frey and is more or less incompatible with Lest.
- Modernizes a large number of Frey's lines. She is now appropriately verbose, as opposed to responding to every other comment with "Huh?" as she did in the original script.
- Includes changes to certain scenarios to reflect Frey's orientation and how the townsfolk perceive her. This is mostly notable for romances with Dolce and Amber.
- Heavily modifies some dialogue for a certain otherwise non-romanceable NPC. Be warned that said NPC is now not entirely faithful to their original character. Use at your own risk.
- May or may not contain a number of easter eggs.
HOW DO I INSTALL THIS?
This mod works with both the older gender swap structure as well as the newer hex edit. How you install it, as well as which set of audio files you will need, will depend on which method you're employing.
For the gender swap, the installation procedure is identical to that of MysticElodie's mod:
1. Install the base gender swap.
2. Install the the gender swap fix.
3. Place all files within {FFF_GS} in your Rune Factory 4 Special\Bundle folder. Overwrite the existing ones if necessary.
Note for users switching from MysticElodie's Lesbian Princess Rewrite: The selected array of audio files used by this mod is slightly different. You will need to delete the following files from \Bundle.
- V_SYA_CALL_WAKADANNA.ogg
- V_MAR_GRE_LOVE_UNKYOUMOKAKKOII.ogg
- V_FOR_LOVE_IIKODEMATTERUTOGOHOUBIMORAEMACHUYO.ogg
- V_FOR_LOVE_IIKODECHUNEEGENKINIOOKIKUNARUNDECHUYO.ogg
- V_COL_LOVE_OOYOSHIKINAANATATODAISUKINAAKACHAN.ogg
- V_COL_GRE_LOVE_KYOUMOKAKKOIIDESUYO.ogg
For the hex-edited executable mod:
1. Apply 0x8f00ff's patch to your game executable.
2. Place all files in {FFF_EXE} in your Rune Factory 4 Special\Bundle folder. You should not need to overwrite anything.
BUT WAIT. WHY WOULD I BOTHER WITH GENDER SWAP IF WE CAN JUST FIX THE ORIGINAL GENDER PROBLEM?
An explanation of this would be rather involved, given how many gender checks the game has beyond the confession events (which is what 0x8f00ff's hex edit fixes, at least of this writing). In its simplest form, though, it can be boiled down to a pro-and-con list like this:
Gender swap can, hex edit cannot:
- Enable the White Day gift event with bachelorettes Frey is dating.
- Allow Frey to attend sleepovers with the bachelors (who will acknowledge Frey being a gay woman).
- Grant Frey access to locked bachelorette Love sub-events. Technically, Forte and Clorica have one Love Event each that can be triggered by hex-edited Frey, but Clorica's event still has a gender check; it will skip about five lines of dialogue towards the end if you are not using gender swap. Other than these two, she will encounter Love Events with the bachelors. Said Love Events have also had their scripts adjusted accordingly.
- Allow the full scope of love-related dialogue with the bachelorettes prior to dating. Dolce in particular loses a notable sequence of romantic dialogue when using the hex edit.
- Restrict Frey's romance options to strictly female. This mod causes the entire cast to perceive Frey as homosexual. Using the hex edit will technically allow Frey to date the bachelors as well, which accordingly will produce confusing results with an otherwise lesbian protagonist. As a warning, I have done nothing to the bachelor sequences. If you confess to a male romanceable, you will encounter inconsistencies.
Technically speaking, gender swap also allows Frey to partake in Newlywed Mode... to an extent. I have not touched this mode. You may experience oddities if you try it.
Gender swap cannot, hex edit can:
- Let you into your gendered bathhouse.
- Fix the audio blip sound during dialogue to suit Frey being female.
- Allow sleepovers with the bachelorettes. (These have been very heavily edited to reflect the possibility that Frey's partner/spouse may be among the attendees.)
TL;DR: If you place heavier emphasis on romance, I recommend using gender swap. Otherwise, feel free to use the hex edit.
I am interested in creating a custom version of 0x8f00ff's patch, but as of this writing my understanding of hexadecimal editing is effectively nonexistent. Accordingly, any progress on this front may take a while.
IS THIS INCOMPATIBLE WITH ANYTHING?
This mod is made up of edits to the following files:
-rf3mc.eng (The game's dialogue file.)
-rf3TxtHeroNickName.eng (Nicknames, normally selectable for you and your romantic partner(s).)
-rf3TxtNpc_split2_1.eng (Names. This includes standard NPC names but also title variables, such as the Prince/Princess string @姫@ and the variable strings @キャラ0@/@キャラ1@.)
Anything that modifies any of the above files is incompatible with this mod.
Additionally, this also uses some forced JP voice lines. You may experience strange results if you employ the English voice setting with it (but your game won't break). If you would like to use the English voices, I recommend poaching the audio files included in the original Lesbian Princess Rewrite and overwriting those of this mod with them.
Q&A CORNER
Q: What's the difference between this mod and MysticElodie's mod?
A: There are a few premises upon which this differs.
- This mod assumes that the user is employing the Japanese voice setting. Some of the voice files that are gendered in English are actually not gendered in Japanese, so there are slight differences between the two mods on that front.
- You will notice very quickly that, in this mod, Frey's personality has undergone a sizeeable change. She is now somewhat pragmatic, but is also substantially more talkative. I've taken some creative freedoms on expanding her persona, and I've also made it so that other characters (e.g. Margaret) will have more wants of her, as well.
- As mentioned before, a certain NPC has had some additional edits not otherwise present. They are not particularly major, but you will notice them if [REDACTED].
- The edits in this mod go fair ways beyond adjusting romance scenarios and/or fixing instances of misgendering. I don't have my hands in every single cookie jar, but I have rewritten a not-insignificant portion of the game's text.
Q: Does this work in Newlywed Mode/Another Episode?
A: As of this writing and the current release, not... entirely, no. I've focused entirely on Story Mode for this one (and it took a very, very long time as-is). Technically, if you are employing the gender swap, some assets will kind of work in Newlywed Mode, but I still wouldn't recommend it. I am undecided on whether or not I will bother expanding this for now.
Q: Does this mod work with Lest in any way?
A: No. The mod has a built-in warning that will display if you select Lest at the beginning of the game.
Q: I found something that you've overlooked!
A: Awesome! Head on over to the Bug Report section of this upload and report it. Please make sure to read the readme post before submitting; I can't help you without appropriate information.
NOTABLES
- Gifting Volkanon with an engagement ring will result in him remarking that you already have a partner regardless of whether or not you actually do. This is his untouched dialogue from the base game. I couldn't think of a way to alter it to make it more universal.
- As long as you talk to them and raise their friendship levels, Arthur, Vishnal and Leon will at some point or other talk about the protagonist's "cuteness." I haven't figured out a way to sidestep this while still making use of the assigned voicing, so it's been mostly left as-is for now. Luckily, they will make no further advances.
- Dylas is written in such a manner that he still crushes on Frey, but also understands that it will not go anywhere. I did this to account for the Playboy Rob event. If this is a problem, it can be avoided by simply not engaging with him (though, barring feeding him a ton of Love Potions all at once, this will lock you out of NG+ if you don't already have it).
- Much like MysticElodie discovered, Leon turned out to be kind of a homophobe in the original text. I've let him keep his relatively conservative personality, but I have done my best to scrub him of any oblique bigotry.
- The dialogue file indicates that there's supposed to be a discussion of Forte's clothing in one of Doug's sleepover events, but I have not been able to get it to trigger. I have made edits to it preemptively, but as I have not seen the event myself, I can't vouch for their quality.
- Some of the pet names available for Frey after she dates/marries a bachelorette are English-localized versions of Japanese terms that, due to the nuances of the language, are often gendered, or at least implied to be. This became a problem because some of them are voiced. I have made changes to some of these options, but not all of them.
Some examples:
-Picking "Sweetie" caused your partner to verbally address you as 旦那様 (danna-sama). I have silenced this one.
-"Honey" resulted in being called お父さん (otou-san). I have silenced this as well.
-"Love" produced パパ (papa). This one's also out.
-"Baby" was a butchered localization of 貴方 (anata), and was voiced as such. This word is not necessarily gendered, but its contextual meaning was wholly lost in the localization. I have left the voice file as-is and instead changed the written name to "Dear."
--Consequently, the pet name "Dearest" has been rewritten to "Sweetheart."
-"Princess" verbalized 王子様 (ouji-sama). This one was an artifact of the flipped internal strings 'Princess' and 'Prince' not being reflected in the game's audio. Unfortunately, this cannot be fixed as-is as the only characters with voice files for the female counterpart (姫, hime) are the male bachelors. I have silenced it for now.
CREDITS
The overwhelming majority of the work in this mod is my own, with one exception: I borrowed the 4.01KB silent-audio file from the original Lesbian Princess Rewrite for silencing voices. Kudos for making this available to the public.
