“I remember when she first came to me,” Master Wizard Farengar Secret-Fire told me. “We were sending her out to Bleak Falls Barrow to retrieve a dragon stone for us. I honestly didn’t think she was going to make it out alive, so I was somewhat hesitant to bother selling her anything, as it would likely just go to waste.

“She was looking through my tomes and had set a couple of Alteration spells aside for purchase. I quietly scoffed at the idea that a savage like her could even read them, much less begin to comprehend the magic used to cast them, so I made a comment about... well let’s just say I said something intentionally incorrect about casting a simple Oakflesh spell. I thought she’d merely shrug it off as ‘mage nonsense’ like most warriors do. Instead she looked at me for a long moment and said, ‘I don’t know who taught you to cast it that way, but there’s a far easier way to weave the magicka into it.’ I was understandably surprised, but even more surprised when we discussed the matter further and I discovered that while she may have been a savage, she had a fairly respectable grasp on the basic concepts, as well as the aptitude to cast several spells.

“As she was setting out for the Barrow I found myself hoping she’d return, not only because I wanted to see the dragon stone, but because so few of my fellow mages come to Dragonsreach. It had been some time since I’d had a discussion about magic with another caster, and while I was a master compared to her, it did make me realize how rusty I’d become on some things.

“She walked out of Dragonsreach without the eagerness of an adventurer or the fear of someone venturing into an old crypt. She didn’t look back at us either. Something inside of me told me that she’d never make it out alive.”
