I agree that a 3D map concept would be a very welcome addition to any game, but in my opinion such a map would require it's own constant camera, my meaning is that, for instance when you enter the map menu, it would be more an idea of taking control of a seperate cam, rather than seeing several still's of an area for different times of day, in this way allowing you to see all the light's, fire's and NPC's in real time! This is just my opinion and input, I apologise that I do not have nearly the experiance to aid you in such an exploit, but hopefully you will find someone who can help! Good luck!
