About this image

It looks cool on a finger (above is not textured) but you'll never see it. I can pick it up, put it down, look at it in inventory; but the moment I equip it, CTD. Have tried everything and wanted to share the pic before moving on.

I take it you've tried all the usual things, e.g. making sure it's skinned to a finger, making sure it has a UV map, making sure is has a dismemberment thingy? (though I'm not sure that last is actually needed, I often don't bother for reasons).

Also, when doing the final touchup in nifskope, try grabbing the BSLightingShaderProperty and its ShaderTextureSet from something you know works (such as a vanilla ring), 3ds almost never exports materials properly in my experience. I've never had outright crashes from broken materials, though...

I did all of that yes, except...when you skin wrap a ring, do you use the hands or the 1stperson hands? I used the former. Trying the latter now.

Edit: NOPE, it's not that either. I just don't know. Crashes whether I equip in 1st or 3rd person btw.

Hands/Fingers, I believe...I've never tried messing with rings, so I don't know specifically. Although being skinned to anything should work...even though it should whine at you if there're unskinned vertices, make sure Weight All Vertices is turned on. Update Tangents and Make Skin Partitions in Nifskope too, for fun.

If it's working in every way except when you go to actually equip it, I would think it almost *has* to be a skinning issue.

Edit: and make sure its name in Nifskope isn't the same as a bone name. I've had mixed results when accidentally doing this, but at the least it's bad practice.

Yep, yep, did all that too. My first time trying a ring is not going nearly as well as other gear. Thank you for your advice though and if you think of anything else I am all ears, seriously.

Well, you could toss the project file and your exported nif (just in case; I have max 2011, not sure that it'll read 2016 projects) onto Google Drive or something and PM me a link, and I could take a look/try to export it first-hand. It sounds like you've tried everything I would, but no harm in checking at this point.

I would delete it after reaching a conclusion, of course. I can't be arsed to finish and share my own creations, let alone someone else's : \

If anyone's curious, it looks like the problem was that the Skin Wrap modifier isn't intended to be used directly on bones, and Bad Things happen as a result of using it that way and running it through the exporter.

I mean, I'd expect it to work just fine regardless - you're asking it to wrap to a single point, which should be the easiest thing in the world - but apparently Autodesk doesn't think the same way as the rest of humankind.
