There was a big skirmish happening on the road.
I joined the battle to help out the Imperials. The strength of both parties were about even but then one by one imperial troops fell and the lines faltered.

My character also lost a lot of blood and wasted a lot of health potions.

When defeat seemed near, a six-men Imperial patrol party arrived in the field and joined the battle and turned the tide.

The mod 'Skyrim Lives' sometimes create quite extraordinary scenes like that.
