The notofications annoy me also extremely. Sometimes I don't feel like clicking through all of them.
I hope too the Nexus team will fix them.

And entirely agree about this notifications problem.
I also would like to see back the page where you have all the notifications.
t seems like a notification page would appease most people's issues with the new notification system

In the meantime, try using your browser's settings to change the colors of seen and unseen notifications. That at least will make it easy to distinguish between old and new items on the thumbnail page.
And yes, I'm beginning to lose my interest in the images, so I'm right with you on this!
