Beth is very lucky that she ran away from the bear.
Maybe the bear simply lost interest,
after realizing that it was so easy not to catch up with the prey,
or it was just too lazy to chase for a long time.

    Bears run faster than humans,
despite their heavy weight and clumsy body.

If, running away from a bear, climbing a tree,
    then this is risky:
since young bears climb trees perfectly,
it is difficult for old bears to do this because of the large weight,
but if they really want to, they can too!

There is a chance to escape if you climb a mountain,
or jump into the water and try to swim away.

Yes she used the distraction of the army soldiers to escape.  The bear killed all the soldiers and the prisoner very quickly so it was a very close run thing, Beth escaping.

      Yes, you're right,
after a fight with an patrol (the prisoner was a very easy prey),
the bear was tired or possibly injured,
due to this it did not have enough strength to catch up with Beth.
