"Arachas are a type of Arachnoid, this family is made up of armored creatures similar to spiders, but with traits of both arachnids and crustaceans, commonly with the ability to camouflage to ambush prey, and with some even having floral elements in their constitution, producing sap and pollen/ spores.
This last element of their biology still generates many debates among entomologists, because while many argue that they really have hybrid characteristics of animals and plants, others argue that they only mimic the plant kingdom, with their production of sap and pollen being just a camouflage, produced using only animal biological resources.
Powerful pincers, a mouth full of sharp teeth, and venom glands filled with deadly toxins, these elements make up the Aracha's deadly arsenal. Because people and farm animals make up an important part of these creatures' diets, Arachas are feared by people who live near the forests of Falkreath where they live. Once native to distant provinces like Valenwood, Black Marsh, and Elsweyr, this invasive species has migrated north over the ages, adjusting to new climates and temperatures.
In Skyrim, they found the moist pine forests very hospitable and made them their home, making use of the mossy caves found there as hiding places during the especially cold months. However, they are still rare in the region, and we hope that this continues, for the good of the local fauna. Some scholars accuse Argonians of being responsible for their introduction, as small Arachas are exotic pets of some eccentric Argonians.
At first glance, a stationary Arachas often looks like a part of the forest undergrowth, a fact it uses to deadly advantage when hunting. Their natural camouflage makes them appear half animal, half plant, with flower-like appendages and tubercles growing on their bodies. Some also have heavy, colorful shells. When ready to attack, an Arachas often begins battle by spitting venom in a surprise attack, then attempts to grab its prey with its crushing pincers.
They begin their lives by hatching from round red eggs, and are known as Arachas Younglings. Their mouths are surrounded by a flower-like structure, which they use as camouflage. Males already have a shell and a powerful chitinous weapon in their pincers. Arachas Younglings are generally protected by adults.
As they grow, males lose their shell and develop a massive, raised appendage that disseminates spores, and their mouth transforms into a large open jaw full of teeth, which they use for ambush hunting. The females in turn develop a similar appendage, which vaguely resembles a pine cone, in which they receive the male's spores for vertilization. These spores are toxic, and are also used as defense. Females have a flower-shaped head, and develop two long filtering appendages, covered in sticky filaments, useful for capturing fish, insects and amphibians. Generally both are found in mating groups, and are cataloged as Arachas Sporespreader and Arachas Sporecarrier.
Once the fertile phase is over, a male once again develops a shell, now more reinforced and heavier, maintaining the large mandible and once again developing the reinforced chitinous coating on the pincers, and are known as Armored Arachas. They use their weight to crush their victims by jumping on them.
Special care must be taken with the Venomous Arachas, as while all of them are capable of spitting acidic sap, the Venomous Arachas spits venom, which is much more deadly. It is a fertilized female, and the production of eggs in its abdomen creates an accumulation of the venomous and gaseous substance that it can expel.
At the end of its life, a female Arachas chooses a large, humid cave, preferably partially flooded, where it builds its nest, and is then cataloged as Arachas Broodqueen. They acquire large proportions and lay hundreds of eggs, which they take care of zealously. They are similar to a Venomous Arachas, but much larger, and have lost their camouflage adaptations, feeding at this stage of life only on decaying food and fruit, or on food hunted by the Arachas Younglings that accompany them.
Every Broodqueen is protected by its consort, an Armored Arachas who also increases in size, although nowhere near the size of a Broodqueen, and is known then as the Arachas Behemoth, who also loses its gigantic open jaw, resembling now the appearance of a Broodqueen but with a big shell on its back, and without the long filtering appendages. Its two pincers coated with reinforced chitin are used to dig the nest cave according to the female's wishes, and it usually guards the cave entrance, protecting Younglings who venture outside. Like the female, at this stage they feed on fruit, carcasses, or game preyed upon by juveniles."
