The Kids Are Alright Renewal is a comprehensive overhaul of the children of Skyrim.

MOD OF THE MONTH FOR APRIL 2021
THANK YOU SO MUCH!

About

This is a complete overhaul of the mod The Kids Are Alright. It is basically a new mod with the same name. It is NOT compatible with old versions of the mod or patches. For those that don't know the original mod, it was a comprehensive, standalone child replacer/new npc/follower/hostile/everything else under the sun kid mod. This version just replaces the default kids and also adds 27 new randomly placed adoptable children to be discovered in the world of Skyrim. The new children are in places that make sense to their particular race - where do you see a lot of Dark Elves, Argonians, etc.? You'll figure it out if you know the game at all. Or just be a big fat cheater and download the document in the miscellaneous file section. The mod includes custom clothes tailored just for these children. And finally, as before, I've hidden away some silly Easter egg characters, cause I'm a very silly person.

Why

There was an incident that caused the original to be accidentally taken down by staff, and upon its restoration, the mod download page was turned into a huge unusable mess, and I removed it. The whole situation related to the cause and effect of the removal was very upsetting, and made me wonder if I wanted to continue with the mod at all. But I came to the realization that once you put something out there, it's out there forever. And what was out there just wasn't up to my current standard, and so here we are. A new day and a new mod. I made the original a very long time ago, and my modding skills at the time were, shall we say, rather basic. So I went through every kid and made either major or minor changes to correct flaws, give them a new look, or just because.

Changes

The original mod was getting WAY too complicated due to feature creep, so I took it back to basics, and here it shall stay. This version only replaces the default game kids, plus adds 27 new adoptable kids of the main humanoid-type races (and also including Khajiit and Argonian) to be discovered in the world. Follower scripts and dialogues were removed. I added new custom hand crafted bodies by me to better differentiate the sexes. Boys and girls also now have dedicated textures, boys are muscled and rough skinned, girls are softer. I fixed a large number of the original kids that had a distorted mouth mesh, caused by what, I don't know. But the biggest change was the conversion to esl (espfe). This was a major undertaking.

I realize that there may have been features of the old version that people are going to be upset about losing in this version, but I have good reasons to make the changes I made. The main reason is simplicity. I learned the hard way that the more features you add into a Skyrim mod, the more potential issues people will have, particularly with people who pride themselves on installing hundreds of mods, many of which are problematic in themselves in my experience.

Some of the deleted features may make a return in separate mods, but I wanted this one to stay true to its roots, a simple replacer mod that also adds a few new adoptable kids to cover the other neglected races. One critical omission I made that people might notice is kill-able or hostile kid options. To do this REQUIRES you to disable the "child" flag, which opens the child characters up to adult mods. I no longer support this type of content involving children, so don't ask, and don't whine at me about it.

If you want to add a BUNCH more of these kids, including bandits, vampires, witches, warlocks, and more, get the "Wild Child" plugin here.

Usage

I highly recommend using this mod on a new game start, and using a mod manager for installation. The assets are in a Bethesda Archive (bsa) file to keep the mod footprint low. The esp has been compressed and flagged as esl (espfe). There are updated patches for popular mods in a FOMOD installer on the download page.

Compatibility

I carry over fixes from USSEP.

This mod is compatible with Hearthfire Multiple Adoptions. Some previous versions needed a patch due to the follower capability in TKAA. The patch for Alternate Start Live Another Life is no longer needed in this version, the daughter of the wandering farmer family was removed.

DO NOT OPEN THIS MOD IN THE CREATION KIT AND MAKE CHANGES UNLESS YOU ARE AN EXPERIENCED MODDER. The 64 bit CK automatically generates new facegen files when you do this and you WILL have issues. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED. If you need to make changes use THIS

DO NOT TRY TO PUT PHYSICS ENABLED ADULT CLOTHES ON THESE KIDS. I made the mod specifically do very bad stuff if you try to do this, deal with it.

This mod is NOT compatible with other kid mods, including older versions of my own. Make sure you remove ALL traces of these mods before installing this one, or you WILL have issues. Just a reminder: loose files overwrite bsa archives, always, load order doesn't matter. Mods that include kids will require patching. I have patched a large number of popular mods and will continue to work on others as I get time. The patches are meant to be used with bsa versions of each mod, unless they don't exist. In that case I supplied loose files, and you will need to overwrite.

Shiva's hair replacer - the loose files version will cause dark heads with the default kids. Use the bsa version of that mod and move TKAA.esp LOWER in load order to fix.

Kids in underwear - You didn't follow my advice in the Usage section, did you? This also may be due to Weapons Armor Clothing and Clutter Fixes (WACCF). To fix, go into that mods UI configuration and toggle the child clothes option OFF.

Not compatible with older versions of the replacer version of the TIWA44 minidress mod. It replaces the default game textures. My mod requires those for its custom child sized clothes. The standalone version of the old mod - or - the newer Shiva/CBBE ports/etc. should work fine. If Dorthe (from Riverwood) has a messed up dress, then this would be the reason.

The Kids Are Alright - Wild Child

A TKAA plugin that adds new wild encounters of hunters, bandits, witches, vampires and more. Approximately 70 or so new encounters of different races of children. All major armor types are available in child editions from a vendor in Whiterun.

What

This is a plugin to The Kids Are Alright Renewal - Ultimate. It will only work with TKAA AND that specific "UltimateRenewal" (latest) version. This is due to Ultimate including new assets required by this and/or any future plugins (by me). This mod places approximately 70 new children into the world, many of which are adoptable. Bandit camps will sometimes have kids around. Same goes for Witch, Warlock or Vampire covens. You will encounter solitary kids that are hunters that can be traded with - just don't expect them to be taking on wolves, bears or big cats. They're just kids. Some of the Stormcloak soldiers have their kids along, but they will not do any fighting. The kids ALL have the default game child flag set, so they act like any other kid in Skyrim. Serious threats cause them to run and hide, you know, like any sane kid would do in real life. If you are expecting a kid to run up and try to stick a knife in you, or take on a dragon, well, this isn't your mod.

Expect some silly easter egg characters. If you know my mods, you know the drill by now.

Why

I went to plugins so people can choose what features they want, and since they're in esl (espfe) format, they don't take up a precious esp slot (same as TKAA). Most of the assets are in the base mod, and that has been locked, so that lighter weight plugins like this are possible.

Usage

The mod is just a simple esl flagged plugin and a compressed archive for meshes and textures. A mod manager is highly recommended. I do not recommend or support manual installation.

NEVER, EVER make changes to the plugin in the Creation Kit. It will generate new facegen meshes and textures and they will be UGLY. Use xedit to make your changes every.single.time. Also the Creation Kit is stupid, and will blindly make new id records outside of the allowed esl range, and you will make a mess of your game. I learned this the hard way. xedit KNOWS not to do these things, and is the correct and SAFE way to make edits. Learn it. Know it. Live it.

Other Notes

You get three different types of intros to the new kids. The bandit, witch/warlock, vampire and afflicted kids typically greet you with "what am I going to do?", etc. due to you having to slaughter all the hostiles around them. That sort of greeting made the most sense. Other kids are just lukewarm to your presence. These will accept an offer to adopt, if you meet the normal game conditions for adoption, but otherwise will give you a generic greeting. The Stormcloak kids are an example. You may or may not be friendly to Stormcloaks, and I didn't want to modify vanilla greetings to check for that. I'm trying to keep this simple for compatibility reasons. And finally, some kids have no interest or need for adoption at all.

FAQ

Q: Why am I seeing purple hair/eyes/etc. on some kids?
A: Download the latest version of TKAA Renewal.

Q: Oldrim?
A: Both this mod and TKAA have been back-ported to LE by others, but please don't ask me for support.

Q: xBox?
A: I don't have one to test, so I can't make the conversion with any confidence. But someone will. The assets should be compatible, it's just a plugin re-configuration as far as I know.

Q: Where can I find the new kids?
A: There are way too many to list, besides, they are meant to be fully random encounters. Get out and explore the wilderness. You'll find them. I tried to place them in areas that made sense.

Q: Can I gift the new armors to my adopted kids?
A: No. I also removed the follower capability for compatibility reasons. You will have to use an npc outfit or follower manager. If you set them as a follower in NFF, AFT, etc, they will auto-equip the best armor you give them, just like any other follower. Same warning as in the base mod - DO NOT TRY TO GIVE THESE KIDS PHYSICS ENABLED ADULT ARMORS. BAD THINGS WILL HAPPEN. ON PURPOSE. You also need Relationship Dialogue Overhaul or RDO light for the follower dialogue.

Q: I miss the old clothes options you had. Will you bring them back?
A: TBD. Papyrus was showing odd error messages for the scripts (which were modified Hearthfire gifting scripts). No one was able to explain to me what the errors meant, if anything (many of the game's own included scripts give various Papyrus errors as well). I removed them out of an abundance of caution.

Q: Are these kids killable, or will they try to kill me?
A: No, and no.

Q: No killable kids, waaaaaah. I want to kill kids, you know, for immersion. Especially the bratty ones - like the Dragonsreach kids or Braith.
A: Sorry, can't help you.

Q: But, the cute little toddlers! What happened to them?
A: They will be returning in a separate standalone mod, so you can add toddlers to the game alongside any kid mod or no kid mod.

Q: I'm seeing yellow or red flagged conflicts in xedit. Why?
A: I carried over all Update.esm and USSEP corrections for both interior and exterior cells.

Please see the TKAA page for credits, most of the relevant assets and credits are there. But a special thanks to the KS Hairdos team (again) for the new hair assets I used  (and in most cases heavily modified to fit these kids). Same goes for a lot of the added armors here that were borrowed from Skykids by en_hawk (which has blanket permissions for use per a forum post). Again, in most cases I made modifications of these, like bone re-weighting or fitment adjustments. Bad Dog for the Lykaios kid stuff I edited. hisssa for the black cat. theru for the Satyr assets. vicn for the Gynoid body. TDN Equipable Horns by Nightshade. Character Mod Resource Pack by nuska. Angelic Halos and Demonic Horns by volvaga0. I try to only use things with open permissions, barring that I request specific permission. I do my best to remember to credit everyone, but this mod has a LOT of moving parts, so if I missed something/someone/specific permission request, please let me know.

And finally, Bethesda, for producing a classic game that people will probably still be modding far into the future. I know I will.
