Starting with v2.12, I'm taking a somewhat different approach than usual for translation of the in-mod text to other languages. There's a few reasons for this:
1) It can be done quickly and easily with a minimal amount of technical knowledge, without needing to decompile and recompile scripts
2) it can be added and removed at any time, without needing a clean save or a new game
3) a translation patch won't be "version locked" - meaning a translation made for v2.12 will still work without conflict with v2.13 or other future versions. Do it once, and it should require a minimal amount of future maintenance
4) it can be done entirely with xEdit, no need to download and install the much larger Creation Kit (CK)
5) You're not limited by the languages officially supported by Skyrim. If you want to translate to Portuguese (for example), you can.
-- you may still be limited by what characters the game can display. I don't know if Skyrim can display Arabic, for example.
6) It doesn't have to be a translation. If anyone wants to customize the messages in their copy, they can do so
How to:
1) Open this mod in xEdit (I'm using SSEEdit 4.0.3)
-- click the + next to the mod name (Fertiltiy Mode 3 Fixes and Updates.esp)
-- click the + next to "Message"
You should see something like this
2) Right-click on the message you want to translate and select "Copy as Override into...."
3) Select <new file>.esp with the ESL (light plugin) flag and click on "ok"
4) Name your translation patch and click "ok"
5) Select the messages you want to translate- you can click on one at a time, or use Shift-click to bulk select, or CTRL-click to selectively pick ones, then:
-- right-click on one you selected, and choose "copy as override into..." again
-- this screen should come up, click the box next to the plugin you made in step #3, above and click on "ok"
6) On the left pane of xEdit, scroll down and you should see something like this
-- left-click the message you want to translate on the left pane
-- right-click the message (full name field) on the right pane and select "edit"
-- type the translated message in the box and click "ok"
7) Repeat steps 5 & 6 for each message you wish to translate (in this example, I'm only changing one message)
8) Exit xEdit and make sure it selected to save the plugin you made (the box next to it is checked)
9) tell your mod manager to load your plugin you just made
In-game, you should see this, with your translated message like my example from step #6
10) (optional) publish your translation so others can benefit from it
At the time of this writing, I've moved just over 50 messages out of scripts into the plugin. If people are going to make translations, I'll move more- eventually, all of them. But if nobody is doing translations, then moving more is a waste of my time and effort.
Question: What is the "\n" that is in some messages?
Answer: It indicates a 'new line'
Example:
"This is a message on one line" displays as:This is a message on one line
but "This is a message\non two lines" displays as:This is a message
on two lines
They're mostly optional- text that is too long will automatically be put on a new line. But you can "force" that new line sooner if you wish.
