Dear Clexius,

It's as you feared. The news here in Riften is troubling on many levels.

Now, I've studied goblins all my life, and while customs differ from tribe to tribe, one thing has always held true. They are beholden to their shamans, and removing them will turn the entire tribe docile.

Moreover, we have seen this method work in practice, most famously with the Three Feather tribe near Bruma. Yet still the rumors persist of goblin activity near the border.

Most disturbing is the news that the "Blue God" himself is leading them. Could it be Malacath himself in some form?

Regardless, if some Daedric being has found its way to this realm, this is a cause for concern. I'll be heading to Gromm's Pass in the morning to investigate.

Faithfully yours, Avanessa Calladius

It's as you feared. The situation here in Riften is worrying on many levels, but is being ignored by civilians and guards alike, who laugh at the prospect of a looting raid carried out by a strong Goblin militia.

Well, I've studied Goblins all my life, and although customs vary from tribe to tribe, one thing has always been true: they fervently serve their shamans, and removing the shaman will make the entire tribe docile, or at worst, delay their plans. Furthermore, we have seen this method work in practice, especially with the Three Feather tribe near Bruma, so this could be a viable solution.

It is worth noting that the unsuspecting people who encountered and were attacked by this supposed Goblin organization, described them as particularly small and stocky, in contrast to the more common Goblins found in Cyrodiil and Skyrim, with taller and slimmer bodies, which leads me to believe that they are Pygmy Goblins.

In case you didn't know, these are in fact smaller, similar in size to a Riekling, and the possible product of isolation for eras within the caves of the inhospitable Jerall Mountains. The possible scarcity of resources, both prey and shelter, made this variant suffer from something similar to island dwarfism, which also affected the well-known Rieklings.

These Pygmy Goblins may seem like a minor threat at first glance, compared to the common threat from tribes of common Goblins who make their camps on the side of roads to rob travelers, but there are several factors to take into account, which increased my concern, especially the news that the ''Blue God'' himself is leading them.

The news came to me through an Orc friend specialized in the study of Goblin-kin, who had contacted a peaceful tribe of Goblins associated with the Stronghold of Largashbur, which had suffered threats from emissaries of the so-called ''Blue God''. He expressed concern that this ''Blue God'' might be some kind of powerful spirit or creature, but that it was unlikely to be Malacath himself.

Could it however in the end be Malacath in some way? This Daedric Prince is known as ''Blue God'' by several tribes of Goblins, and although unlikely, the Daedra act in unpredictable ways. However, I do not believe, like my fellow scholar, that Malacath would deign to such a low role, leading a band of Pygmy Goblins in a dark and smelly cave. Regardless, if any Daedric being have reached this realm and settled here, it is cause for concern.

I will go to Gromm's Pass at nightfall to investigate, I believe that my magical capabilities are enough to at least explore the area and face some Goblins, and any Dremora posing as a God for this tribe.

Gromm's Pass is apparently a small cave located right here in the Rift, south of Forelhost. Until a recent collapse, it served as an underground passage through the Jerall Mountains to Cyrodiil. Two traveling merchants reported to the guards that they saw a group of 4 or 5 of these small goblinesque beings enter this cavity, so I believe the area is worth researching.

I have noticed suspicious activity from a small group hanging around Riften, and although I haven't seen them yet, I have already found deer that survived the Goblins' hunting attempts, having spears stuck in their bodies, and I also found the corpse of a bandit this morning, with small spear piercings, probably a raider from Fort Greenwall who was a victim of this group.

Even common Goblins, considerably larger and better armed, avoid attacking cities, so I believe that these Pygmies are in fact being encouraged by a non-Goblin leader to take these bold actions.

My attempts to alert the Guards only made them act upset with me, as if I were paranoid and exaggerated in my concerns, so I decided to take responsibility into my own hands. Goblins tend to be less active at night, so I believe that traveling silently will be the best option, going unnoticed by both Goblins and Guards, already suspicious of my research and concerns.

I intended to send this message to you in Shor's Stone before leaving, but the imminent approach of attacks by this militia, which until a few days ago was not yet operating near the walls of Riften, makes me postpone this until later, as I was unable to find a courier and my departure needs to be quick. Clearly Skyrim has a lower than necessary number of couriers, as we have mentioned before in our conversations.

Upon returning from my expedition, which I hope will be successful, I will send this report to you, or depending on my motivation, I will travel to Shor's Stone myself and deliver it personally. I believe that by now you have returned from your work trip to Windhelm, and that you are currently staying in the small mining village.

Faithfully yours, Avanessa Calladius

Blue God's Journal

Day 1 The tribe demanded I prove myself as a hunter. They want me to trap some game and return to the Stronghold, probably for a celebratory feast. It shouldn't be too hard. I already set up a snare by the water. Now I can just sit back and let the food come to me.

Day 2 My snare trap doesn't seem to be working. I tied it to a stick just like they said. Clearly Lob gave me a flimsy rope. Either that or the sticks out here are no good. I don't know how they expect me to hunt with such broken tools.

Day 3 It's only been a few days, but I already feel like giving up. I'm hungry and I've gone through all the bread Atub gave me. By Malacath, they really expect me to die out here.

Day 5 The rabbits here are too nimble to chase down. I thought I could just grab one if I put some bait in my pockets, but problem is, I don't have any bait. I shouldn't have eaten all the carrots in my sack but I was starving.

Day 6 Malacath's blessings, I'm alive! I found a cave south of my camp full of strange blue mushrooms, which I immediately ate. I remember Atub saying something about some mushrooms being poisonous, but I didn't get sick so what does she know. Anyways, I ended up filling my sack with them. If I come back with a full stomach maybe I can convince the others we don't need to hunt.

Day 7 I came back to Largashbur with my sack full of mushrooms and one by one they spit them out and mocked my hunting skills.

If that wasn't humiliating enough, Chief Yamarz took a hammer and crushed the sack, then dumped the contents on my head. None of my tribe mates bothered to defend me, they just stood there and laughed.

Now Yamarz says I have to go back out there and catch something with some legs. It's not fair. When's the last time he caught anything?

Day 8 I'm so hungry. Hunting is impossible. Maybe I'll just die. That'll teach them to leave me out here alone.

Day 9 By Malacath, what just happened? I went back to the cave to pick some more mushrooms, when something must've tripped me because I fell into a pit.

I yelled out for help, but instead of getting rescued, I was quickly surrounded by a horde of green monsters, hissing and gnashing
their teeth. I figured that was it. They were going to eat me.

But before I could scream, one of them dropped to his knees and started bowing!

The others followed. Could they be goblins? You never see them this far north. In any case, they seem to be treating me like an honored guest.

Day 11 Blessings of Malacath, it turns out they think I'm a god! They don't seem to treat other Orcs the same, so it must be the blue stains on my face. I need to thank Yamarz for dumping that sack on my head. I think I'll do that, right before I have my goblins claw open his face.

Day 15 My army grows by the day. Soon we'll have enough numbers to overrun the Stronghold. For now I have them collecting blue mushrooms from Cyrodiil so I can maintain the ruse, although some of them might be starting to suspect.

The other day I think one of them saw me use a stick to spread blue paint on my back. I'll need to keep a close eye on him.

Day 18 I figured out who it was that saw me, it's that nasty little runt with the funny-looking spear. It seems he's the hunter of the group. He reminds me of every Orc back at Largashbur who laughed in my face.

I tried to grab the spear from him but he must've done something to it because it was too heavy to lift. I don't know if it's Hircine or Malacath that's protecting him, but he needs to learn that goblins only have one god. The Blue God. Me.

Day 21 The tunnel the goblins were using to come here from Cyrodiil's collapsed. No matter. My army is nearly big enough to take the Stronghold, and once that's done I can sell Yamarz's things for a whole wagon full of paint. Before I do that though, I need to make an example of the non-believer.

Once he's dealt with, it'll show all the other goblins what happens when you question your god.

Day 25 My army has been getting too close to Riften. I don't want them to draw the attention of the guards as that could ruin
everything, but they feel overconfident due to being under the command of their God, me.

They need to hunt, but with the main hunter acting rebelliously, I don't think they are doing very well, as they return
every day with fewer spears, and often without any game at all.
