Personal Quest – “All of this Past”
(It should be noted that his personal quest roleplays best alongside a Dragonborn character, and ties in with the main quest. Certain steps in the investigation can be skipped, but it is recommended to pick Kaidan up as early in the main quest as possible.)
- After rescuing Kaidan from the Abandoned Prison, rest with him in a safe location; you’ll be able to ask him more about his run-in with the Thalmor.
- While there are many dialogue options, the important ones are to ask him about himself to find out more about his history; more specifically, about his sword and heritage.
- In order to translate the runes on his sword, you will either need to continue to learn more words of power (15 total), or purchase the book “Dragon Language: Myth No More” from Ren, a Breton book vendor who can usually be found in the Bards’ College.
- Additionally, the player will need to defeat the dragon at Kynesgrove to trigger the subsequent conversation. If the player has already killed Sahloknir, you will need to instead bring Kaidan to Sky Haven Temple to trigger the conversation.
- When in the Thalmor Embassy, a dossier can be found in one of the chests in the torture room – if the player has already completed Diplomatic Immunity, a back-up copy of this dossier can be found at Northwatch Keep.
- Speak to Kaidan to receive the prompt to go to Northwind Summit.
- Exploring the area will reveal a cache in the rubble with words in the dragon language engraved on.
- Take the contents and speak to Kaidan again.
- You will be prompted to the dragon burial mound northwest of Anga's Mill.
- There is another cache at the center of the mound.
- Take the contents and speak to Kaidan again, then find a place to rest and speak to him one more time to complete the quest.
Personal Quest – “Blood & Fire”
- To trigger this quest, visit the Shrine of Mehrunes Dagon with Kaidan, and speak to him there.
- You can press him for more information when you find a place to rest.
- 24 hours after the conversation, Kaidan will be confronted by a dremora.
- Killing it will properly start the quest - it is a good idea to keep the Daedra heart harvested, you will need it later.
- Go to a small cave at the bottom of the stairs that leads to Mehrunes Dagon's Shrine. Inside there will be a door with a seal over it, reach it and speak to Kaidan again.
- He will tell you how to open the door.
- You will need to gather fire salts, a daedra heart, and black soul gem fragments.
- You can get these from Falion's house in Morthal, or make them yourself at a smelter from a filled black soul gem.
- Kaidan will also supply you with an ingredient you’ll need to complete the talisman.
- Take all ingredients to a forge and create the key.
- Return to the cave and enter the Deadland Sanctuary.
- Witness the cutscene, and kill the boss.
- Note - The boss is highly resistant to magic and will primarily use flame spells and damage.
Romance Questline
- The romantic questline can be unlocked by wearing an Amulet of Mara and speaking to Kaidan.
- The quest will not fully unlock unless you've progressed far enough as 'friends' – this entails visiting new locations together, such as settlements, to hear his thoughts
- From there, you have three possible paths for your relationship to develop:
- Hot - Relationship is sexual or have had flirty responses
- Warm - Relationship may or may not be sexual, player has requested to 'take things slow'
- Cool - Relationship may or may not be sexual, player has been distant, said they 'don't know what they want'
- When you've progressed far enough along, you can trigger a marriage proposal in player homes or certain scenic areas (Shadowgreen Cavern, Eldergleam Sanctuary etc), which then gives you the choice of a small wedding in the forest, or a large wedding at the Temple of the Eight.
- If you have read many books or skill books, Kaidan will comment on this, and you can offer to give him certain books which he will trade for various items or training.
- If you have a book to trade you will have a dialogue prompt for it.
- Ren, the new book vendor in Solitude, will have stock of many books useful to the progression of Kaidan’s personal quest, as well as books that can be traded to him.
- Kaidan can be persuaded to read works of Lord Byron, or the story of Fjori and Holgeir to you.
- There are two creepy-pasta stories to find in-game; one is located at Kaidan's abandoned campsite.

Mount Location
- You can buy a horse for Kaidan from the Whiterun stables.
- If you ever lose track of it, you have a silent summon power to quickly teleport the horse to you.
NEW: Platonic Autumnwatch Guide
- Allows the player to purchase Autumnwatch without having to romance Kaidan.
- To purchase Autumnwatch, go to Ivarstead and approach Jofthor. Please note that you need to complete Kaidan's friendship progression before this dialogue will appear.
- You can usually find him working at or near the grain mill during the day, or inside Fellstar Farm, right next to the grain mill in Ivarstead.
- Speak with him, and he will offer to sell Autumnwatch to you for 7000 gold. Upon purchasing the deed, you will also receive a key from him.
- The house is just outside of Ivarstead. Follow the road across the bridge from the inn. If you get to Honeystrand Cave, you’ve gone too far.
- Once inside the house, you can speak with Kaidan and tell him he can stay at Autumnwatch whenever he wants. Your home is his home.
- After this, whenever you dismiss Kaidan, you will find him living in Autumnwatch.
