Backstory: Abandoned as a small child in a big city. Survived for years eating trash, or begging for money to whoever passed. Some would take pity and give a few coins, but most would spit or curse at him, sometimes even kick him. Sometimes when trying to sleep, he dreams of becoming an strong fighter, capable of saving people from monsters, earning fame and big rewards, never going a day without eating well ever again.
After growing up a bit, decided to start his life as an adventurer, and after finding a sword, went to fight monsters outside the city to sell their materials for profit. That's when Niku realized how frail his body was. After a few swings of the blade, his arms would hurt and stop responding. Almost eaten alive by wolves, Niku managed to run back into the city, selling the sword he had for a couple coins, and soon found himself back to begging.
Eventually got taken by a ringleader and forced to pickpocket valuables. Niku was against it at first, knowing it was against the law and risky, but convinced himself that if he only targeted nobles it wouldn't be so bad, and the leader would be satisfied. One day, after being caught in the act, got severely beaten by guards and left to die in a ditch. Niku, still conscious, tried to stand up, but his legs felt numb and unresponsive, which made him cry and give up, angry at his own uselessness.
To his surprise, the well-dressed old lady who he just failed to pickpocket approached him. She coldly stared at Niku's bruised body, seemingly studying him. After a while, she opened her mouth and said she could help him, on the condition that he promises to never steal again. Despite being so hurt he could barely speak, Niku mustered the strength to tell the woman that stealing was the only way he could survive, as he was too weak to fight or do physical labor, and how a rich hag like her would never understand. The well-dressed old lady then used a healing spell on Niku's legs, and told him to follow her.
After traveling for a while, they reach a road inn. The old lady explained that this is where Niku will work now. The inn used to be popular among travelers, but currently it was going through hard times, and the old lady who once had many employees was now left to care for the place by herself. She explained how the money Niku tried to pickpocket from her was her old jewelry that she had just sold, and was pretty much all she had left. And how the food and roof over his head that she could give him would not come for free. Niku did not want to go back to a life of crimes, so he promised the old lady he would do whatever it takes to stay with her.
The old lady told Niku that being as weak as he was, there was not much he could do for her. He couldn't make money by fighting like a man should, and there weren't enough customers that she couldn't serve by herself. So she told Niku her plan: use his feminine traits to bring in more customers. At first, Niku didn't understand how he would do that, but he promised he would be useful to her and do whatever she told him to.
After recovering from the bruises and pain, the old lady took Niku to the city. There, they visited a clothing store. The old lady picked a couple dresses for Niku to try out. Being embarrassed and still confused, Niku put on one of the dresses. To his surprise, that outfit made for women fit his body really well. He checked himself in the mirror, enjoying the sight of himself wearing such a beautiful piece of clothing. The old lady, who was just watching in silence, paid for all the clothes and pulled Niku by the hand outside the store. As he realized he was in public, Niku felt ashamed and looked down. The old lady suddenly laughed, pulling out two strings and tying up Niku's hair in twintails fashion. Niku asked if she was having fun putting him through this weird situation. The old lady admitted to having fun for the first time in years, and also complimented him for looking better in that dress than she thought he would. She then starts walking as she hold his hand, forcing Niku to walk alongside her.
Despite being embarrassed, Niku eventually looks up. Surprised, he realizes that people are looking at him and smiling, sometimes greeting. This never happened when he was begging, so he wondered what was the difference. Is it the women clothing, he asked the old lady. She told him that this is happening because he is giving people what they like to see. If you cannot be a strong man, or a wealthy noble, then you can be a cute girl. Your body may be weak, but your face is beautiful, so you should use it to your advantage. While Niku doesn't truly believes what he just heard, he does enjoy the newfound attention he is getting. "Can even a weak man like me be loved like this?". For the first time, Niku feels happy enough to smile. As he walk around the city, he greets everyone who passes by him. Although, when a noble man replies saying how beautiful Niku looks, he goes back to being embarrassed and silent, but still smiling. Taking this chance, the old lady tells the man that her cute granddaughter works at the inn down the road, and to come visit sometime.
As they both return back to the inn, Niku tells the hag that he understands her plan. He will use his feminine looks to attract customers to the inn. The old lady tells him to call her grandma now, just for the sake of their business. Niku agrees, and proceeds to asks to be taught about how to be more attractive as a girl.
A couple days later, Niku feels confident enough to travel to the city by himself. He puts on his cute maid outfit, style his hair into twintails with ribbons, and take a bunch of pamphlets about the inn, which he distributes to people in the city with a smile on his face. It works, and in the very first week there's already an increase in customers visiting the inn, some for resting, others for drinking, and most there to be served by Niku. With time, Niku goes from being a shy boy who is afraid of people, to a cross dressing boy who is more feminine than most women and despite still being aware of people, can greet everyone who enters the inn with a warm smile on his face, serving and flirting with both men and women who are there mostly for his company.
The years pass, the inn becomes popular again, with men and women being employed to serve the many clients who show up everyday. Niku is still the most popular "girl" around, and every adventurer loves to visit the inn and get healed by him, in every way possible, as long as they have the gold for it. Even after being found out as a boy, the love he receives has not changed. Many adventurers even protect the place, free of charge, as if protecting their favorite meeting place. The old lady, who doesn't even need to work there anymore, is happier than she ever been since losing her family. So she makes sure to remind Niku everyday about how grateful she is, even if she was the one who started it all. "This is good, but it's not enough, grandma", says Niku. To him, he can do much more. The inn is doing extremely well now, but Niku is not as wealthy as he wants to be. "Every gold, every coin, every treasure in this world, I want it to be mine". Grandma warns him about being too greedy, and how that could be the end of him. Whatever it is he wants to buy, he just needs to work more till he has enough money for it, says the old lady. Niku assures her that what he wants cannot be simply bought with gold. What he truly wants is to gather all the wealth in the world, so he can share it with the ones who are too powerless to get it by themselves. "I want to be the adventurer who slayed the monster called poverty". Grandma is surprised, and laughs. It is a very childish dream to have, but she is proud of what the boy has become. With that dream in mind, Niku eventually travels to far away lands, sometimes in search of rare treasure with his strong adventurer friends, to meet powerful nobles, or whatever opportunity he can find to earn the most gold. But he never forgets about his grandma's inn, coming back often to make sure everything is going well.
