About this image

Just started learning Blender a few days ago to keep myself busy during the quarantine, and got to working on a daedric greatsword. Still got a lot of work to go (and definitely gotta redo the UVs before I texture it) but I'm pretty proud of what I got so far and thought I'd share. Any constructive criticism is welcome and much appreciated :D

Really love the pommel. I wish I thought about it when modelling my version of a daedric longsword. I hope you as well as I get to finish and release the mod! I started modeling a little more than a year ago, so if you have any questions on how to model and texture a sword, I might be able to help.

The pommel is definitely my favorite part of the model too, I still feel like something is missing, thinking to maybe add another spike on one side of the blade to add some asymmetry to give it a bit more of that organic daedric feel. Textures will definitely be an ordeal for me since I'm not overly experienced with them, but I'm sure I'll get it eventually. Ultimately I hope to make a full daedric weapon set to replace the vanilla ones with something more practical and realistic looking while still retaining the personality of them in the lore. For now I'll settle with a single sword though.

Best of luck with your mod too, I'll keep on the lookout for if you decide to release it :D

Well for the textures you will probably need to learn to use Substance Painter software. It's not as hard to start with it, don't worry. Texturing with Blender is generally a bad idea. As for the model, I would highly advise making both high poly and low poly versions of the model and then baking them together to make a normal map that you apply to your low poly. This will achieve a high poly look without frying your computer when you put it in the game. Low poly shouldn't be more than around 5000 vertices tops for a sword. For the high one, you can go nuts and use the Subsurface modifier to make it look as good as you want. But that's just without getting to much into it. But hey, if you already knew that, I'm just telling you stuff I wish I knew at your point!
If it's the opposite, and you have no idea what I'm even talking about, you can just DM me and I might give some more concrete help with that on Discord!

Thanks for the advice, I actually have a decent basic understanding of what work needs to be done to make a game-ready model, I think the harder part of it all is going to be the process of porting to Nifskope looks like a pain, but I'll figure that out later.
As for the texture painting part, I painted a small object following a tutorial earlier this week and I'd rather eat my foot than have to paint something in blender again, especially something as detailed as a sword lol. I've been considering substance painter but didn't know if I should invest in it or not since I'm still fairly new, but based on you're recommendation I'll probably just get the license for it, seems much less of a headache than the blender route.
I've been modding Skyrim for years and Oblivion before that so I've gained a decent understanding of what the game engine can handle, I just always thought that 3D modeling was too hard. I tried Blender (2.4 or 2.5 ish?) before when I was in middle school and it's definitely gotten a lot easier to use since then.
I appreciate the advice though, and I'll keep it in mind!

They give a 1 month trial on the Substance which is enough to get decent at it and finish up a project. If you want though, I might as well do them for you in no time. This is probably my favorite part of the process, so I wouldn't mind doing it for free :)
As for Nifscope and all that other stuff, I'm not experienced enough. I had a guy help me get a model of a shotgun halfway into fallout 4 but then we abandoned the project. Anyway, Nexus has an insane amount of good people that are brilliant at what they do, so if you want some help or an answer just ask :)

Really reminds me of classic Daedric weapons from daggerfall and Morrowind. I really like this. Keep up the amazing work!

I actually used the daedric claymore from Morrowind as inspiration when designing the sword, and I love the old school daggerfall aesthetic too, glad that got through :D
