With this mod, any player with the Vampire Lord power can turn almost any canine into a Death Hound follower by using Vampiric Drain to kill them. There is no limit to the number of Death Hounds you can create. If you dismiss a Death Hound, it will return to where it was originally created.
Most Death Hounds that you create will level with you from level 10 to level 25. There are notable exceptions:
- The dogs Ysgramor, Tiber, Torom, and Stump are house pets. These dogs will turn into weaker Death Hounds and will only level with you from level 6 to level 20.
- Vigilance is a trained combat dog. As such, he levels with you from level 6 to level 50. If you turn him into a Death Hound, this level range stays the same.
- Barbas is a pretty powerful Daedra. If you can manage to turn him into a Death Hound, he will level with you from level 15 to level 75. He will also have a superior bite attack to other Death Hounds. Turning Barbas into a Death Hound is almost certainly NOT lore friendly, but the option is there. To do this, attack Barbas with Vampiric Drain, then attack him with the Rueful Axe within 4 seconds.
NOTE: There's an odd oversight in vanilla where CuSith and Garmr are only level 5, while almost all other pet followers will level with you from level 10 to level 25 (including the Dawnguard Huskies). The USSEP corrects this oversight, bringing the two up to the same standard as other pet followers. This is why the Death Hounds created through my mod are more powerful than vanilla CuSith and Garmr.
Some canines cannot be turned into Death Hounds, at all:
- Summoned Familiars cannot be turned into Death Hounds.
- Spectral Warhounds cannot be turned into Death Hounds.
- Foxes cannot be turned into Death Hounds. I know they're canines, but they're not Death Hound material.
- Werewolves cannot be turned into Death Hounds. This is obvious, but I felt the need to state it.
Beware, high level enemy Vampires may also be able to turn dogs and wolves into Death Hounds of their own! This includes dogs that are following you. If your dogs are not essential, Vampires may be able to kill them and turn their resurrected and defiled corpses against you!
Compatibility
- All Death Hounds created by this mod use the vanilla follower management system, and thus should be fully compatible with all follower managers. Personally, I use Amazing Follower Tweaks, so I know that works. If anybody encounters a problem with my mod while using a follower manager, please let me know!
- Sacrosanct - Vampires of Skyrim is technically compatible out-of-the-box, but the Vampire Drain spell is nerfed back to vanilla by default. I have provided a patch that brings it back up to Sacrosanct's standards. Load this mod AFTER Sacrosanct.
- Better Vampires requires a patch, which can be found in the optional files for this mod.
