Description
Have you ever found it silly that you could go straight to the College of Winterhold, blitz through the questline and become Arch Mage by level 12? Or become Harbinger of the Companions similarly? Or Guildmaster of the Thieves Guild by killing Mercer Frey who was only level 10? This mod adds a progression to the minimum level for the various dungeons (specifically, the “Encounter Zones”) for the major questlines.

For example, with this mod, the Companion's questline has the following minimum levels:

  • Dustman’s Cairn:    level 10  (vs. level 6 in vanilla)
  • Gallow’s Rock:        level 19  (vs. level 6 in vanilla)
  • Glenmoril Coven:    level 28  (vs. level 14 in vanilla)
  • Driftshade Refuge: level 37  (vs. level 6 in vanilla)
  • Ysgramor’s Tomb:  level 46  (vs. level 6 in vanilla)

If you are at a lower level than the specified minimum value for the dungeon, the game will level the dungeon as if you were the minimum level specified. If your level is higher than the specified number, it will use your level. The game engine uses the level of the dungeon to affect the level of the enemies and of the loot.

The level ranges for the questlines are:

  • Skyrim Main Quest:      12-40
  • College of Winterhold: 10-45
  • Companions:        10-46 (as shown above)
  • Civil War:      10-35
  • Thieves Guild:       10-42
  • Dark Brotherhood:        12-40
  • Dawnguard: 15-50
  • Dragonborn: 20-56

Also, all of the unique bosses have their level range modified to match the Encounter Zone that they are in. So, for example, if you are level 45 or less at the end of the College questline, Ancano will be level 45. In the Dawnguard questline, Vyrthur will be at least level 47, and there will be lots of high level falmer to go through to get to him. Harkon will be at least level 50 when you fight him. Etc.

This encourages you to pace yourself, especially if you have other mods that make things more difficult, e.g. more enemies, more aggressive enemies, etc. Go off and do other stuff. Become well known before becoming Harbinger of the Companions. It also ensures that the bosses will be actual bosses, not level 10 pushovers. On the other hand, the higher-level loot may tempt you into dungeons you’re not ready for, which can also be interesting.

Compatibility
The Encounter Zone modifications are mostly compatible with anything. Just put this mod after other mods that change Encounter Zones. There are mods that disable combat boundary, allowing mobs to follow you from one EZ to another, and those will conflict.

The FOMOD has two options for making the NPC changes: SkyPatcher or ESP-FE. The SkyPatcher version of the NPC changes should be compatible with anything. The ESP-FE version of the NPC changes will have all of the normal NPC compatibility issues.

Install/Uninstall
Can be installed and uninstalled at any time. All it does is change some values on existing records.
