In the base game, there's no way to have more than one dragon soul when the first word of Unrelenting Force is auto-purchased. However, mods can make it possible to gain souls earlier, and if you have, say, five souls squirreled away, losing all five of them in exchange for the first word of Unrelenting Force is a pretty raw deal.
This mod tweaks the script to always use up one soul, presumably the one you just got from Mirmulnir.
