This was a replacer I had many requests for. Today, I'm introducing a whole new method for my NPC replacers. From this point forward, I'll be using this method for replacers and followers. What exactly is it? Read on, and please, give it a try. This changes everything for my mods.
What are the common issues for replacers? Conflicts and updates. For vanilla NPC replacers, its always a chore for users to solve conflicts, especially if they use more than one author's NPC replacers. It has become a skill-based task to have a load order that doesn't have conflicts, black faces, and other issues when using more than one overhaul. My new method removes this hassle. Conflicts are going to be seldom, if any at all, and will never result in black faces that won't go away or unknown load order issues causing weird appearance issues.
Last week I had some time to think about how some things about my mods were bugging me. Especially the Visions All-in-One replacers. People enjoyed being able to select which NPCs they wanted when I did the Pantheon NPC replacer packs. So my first decision was to bring that back in a new mod I'll be calling ColdSun's Selects - NPCs. I wanted to make the process as easy as possible, especially to get rid of the annoying conflicts the AIO had. Even with being able to selectively install the NPCs like my Pantheon version, people are still going to run into conflicts and black face bugs. This is where my next idea popped up.
I saw SkyPatcher when it was released and was super impressed at what it could do. A lot like SPID, it could insert changes into the game without having to create plugins. It is an SKSE mod that doesn't take a spot in your load order and it won't effect a single thing unless you are using SkyPatcher patches. My idea was to ask Zzyxzz (the author of SkyPatcher) to add a feature in that allowed me to change face, hair, and brow records on NPCs. He said it wasn't possible, or at least that it would be nearly impossible to remain persistent in saves. In the same paragraph response, he said it would be possible to clone another NPC (he called it a template) and apply their appearance to any NPC you wanted, and also make it persistent in saves.
This blew my mind as I thought of the possibilities. Even better than the idea I had, he basically gave me the key to solving almost all the issues I was having with replacers. He then set out to making it happen and I helped him test the new feature. Today (9/3/2024) he uploaded a version of SkyPatcher with this support. Now when you players see what you can do with this, you're going to go crazy. Especially folks who already know how to use SPID and enjoy what it can do. But for now, I'm here to tell you that this new feature will allow me to put out NPC replacers better than I had ever done before. Here are some of the major things it will allow me to do:
- No more black face. Period.
- A SkyPatcher appearance change will always win over any other NPC replacer mod that uses a standard method and plugin.
- If there is more than one SkyPatcher mod that changes the appearance of the NPC it is as simple as finding the INI patch file of that mod and removing it to clear up the conflict - and the only conflict you get isn't a messed up face but an NPC that looks like the winning mod. That's it.
- Updates to the original follower, for example: Secunda, have zero effect on my appearance. You can update your mod all day long and my appearance mod won't be effected. My mod also does not change (override) ANY of Secunda's records - or even touch any of them.
- When I do my ColdSun's Selects NPC replacer packs, you can use ANY NPC expansion you want with no need for a patch for my mod to work with the mod you want to use. Improved Follower Dialogue Lydia? NO PROBLEM. No patch needed now or ever.
To learn how I'm doing this just stop by my Discord and I'll tell you technically how it's done. Or just look at this mod. This being my first, I'm only scratching the surface of what I want to do with SkyPatcher. Expect a lot more to come. I highly recommend you get SkyPatcher, even if you don't want to use my mods - its a game changer.
