Description

This mod replaces the Time-travel scene (the one where you learn Dragonrend by using an Elder Scroll and seeing the Tongues of Old use it) at the Throat of the World, during Alduin's Bane. It is replaced with messageboxes and sounds.

I did this for 3 reasons:

1. The scene is buggy and janky

As the time-travel is heavily scripted and prone to bugging out. Such as:

  • Certain dragons or NPCs might not spawn.
  • If followers are used and are caught into the dragonfire, they might aggro on the dragon, attack him and bug out the scene.
  • Certain dragons or NPCs might die too early or too late.

My mod basically skips all of that.

2. Convenience/QoL

If you have played through the game hundreds of time, watching the entire scene each time, can be annoying.

While I myself am not a huge proponent of Convenience/QoL, I can understand it to be very annoying to watch a lengthy scene just for it to bug out and softlock.

If you just want to go through the scene quickly, you could just click through the messageboxes to get through it much quicker.

3. Narrative reasons

I specifically left the messageboxes a bit ambiguous, when it comes to the role of the Dragons and Alduin.

I did this to leave the interpretation open to the player, whether Alduin and his Dragons are actually considered "evil".

Pre-Recorded Video

I've included a file called "BIK Video". This is an optional file that plays a pre-recorded video of the scene, instead of the messageboxes.

It requires v1.1 or later of the main file.

This is meant for users that still want to see the scene, but don't want to bother with the buginess of the scene.

Note: The quality of the video is pretty low, my apologies for that. However, the file is already pretty big as is. (600 MB) If anyone knows a way to increase the quality, without bloating the file-size, please let me know!

Alternative ideas

If I ever find the time, I'd probably change it further to:

Spoiler:
Show
  • The player doesn't immediately learn and unlocks all 3 words of Dragonrend, but instead learns the names of the Tongues of Old.
  • The player then needs to finds out what happened to them, in a quest to find their tombs.
  • Once found, each of them (in ghost form or through a Word Wall) will teach the Dragonborn one Word of Power, which the player still needs to unlock using Dragon Souls.
  • There will be no Alduin fight at the Throat of the World, instead the player needs to find a way into Sovngarde to fight him there.
  • Alternatively, the Dragonborn learns Dragonrend from the Tongues of Old at Sovngarde.

However, this all depends on how Skyrim - Extended Cut is going to handle it.

Compatibility

This mod is incompatible with mods that edit the QF_MQ206_00036193 script.

Known Issues

After the scene has ended, the elder scroll visual effect might briefly appear. I have put in some failsafe to reove them, but it's possible they might still persist.

In that case, use the console command:

Spoiler:
Show

help "Remove Elder Scroll Effects"

This will return a [SPEL] and [MGEF]. Take note of the FormID of the [SPEL].

Then use the console command:

Spoiler:
Show

player.addspell <FormID>

For instance if the FormID is FE005B07, you'll enter:

player.addspell FE005B07

FAQ

Q: Why didn't you add this to Andrealphus Scene Tweaks?
A: I deemed this tweak out of scope of that mod.

Q: ESPFE?
A: Yes.

Q: Does installing/updating/uninstalling on an existing save work?
A: As far as I know, it should. However, it's good practice to keep a backup save prior to doing this, just in case.

Q: Is this compatible with <insert mod>?
A: I don't know by heart. You might need to check yourself.

Q: Will you make a patch for <insert mod>?
A: I have no plans for patches. Feel free to make them yourself. (see permissions)

Q: I have a suggestion to improve the mod. Can you do it?
A: Maybe, if I have time and I like the idea, I'll consider it.

Q: Will you port this to <insert platform>?
A: No, I myself only support the Steam and GOG English SE and AE versions of Skyrim. If someone else wants to port it, feel free. (see permission) If you decide to port it, you yourself take full responsibility to offer support to said port. I will not provide no support for any ports by third parties.

Q: I use a ported version of this mod on <insert platform> and I have a problem. Can you help?
A: I don't provide any support for third party ports on other platforms than the Steam and GOG English SE and AE versions of Skyrim. If you have issues, you should adress the person that ported it.

Q: Does this work on Skyrim 1.6+, aka "Anniversary Edition"?
A: Yes, it should.

Q: Why don't your mods use MCMs and instead use this janky console command system to set globals?
A: I am not a fan of MCMs. You can set the globals by making a patch in xEdit. I have no plans of changing this. If you want to add an MCM, feel free. (see permissions)

Q: Why don't you use FOMODs?
A: That would require reuploading the entire mod, in question, even if I only make a small change. My internet is limited and reuploading the files each time will take a huge chunk of my monthly volume.
