Parry attacks with carefully-timed counterattacks. Play as a dual wielder or spellsword without sacrificing defensive options.
- Parry attacks by swinging immediately after an enemy. The default window for parrying is about 1/3 second (configurable).
- Parries are animated: characters' weapons will bounce off each other and a sound effect will play.
- Parries are treated as blocking with a weapon: they will block damage according to your block skill (up to 80% based on the weapon) and level the Block skill.
- Parrying a 2-handed weapon with a 1-handed weapon will stagger you. Enemies who attempt to parry your 2-handed weapon strikes with 1-handed weapons will be staggered.
- Attacks that are parried will be treated as blocked attacks for both you and the enemy you are parrying, regardless of who swings first. But you will only receive the skill increase if you swing second, to incentivize careful timing over wild swinging.
- Enemies will parry each other's attacks if SPID is installed. If not, parrying will just take place between the player character and enemies.
- Parrying works to block and level Block skill in VR, but your weapon will not bounce of off enemies' weapons.
Requirements
- Required: SKSE or SKSE VR
- Recommended: SkyUI or SkyUI VR for the Mod Configuration Menu.
- Recommended: SSE Engine Fixes or Engine Fixes VR, for reasons noted below.
- Optional: SPID or SPID VR will make NPCs parry each others' attacks. If not, parrying will only take place between the player and NPCs.
- Optional: SKSE Address Library or Address Library VR if using SPID or SPID VR to distribute features to NPCs (required for those mods).
Compatibility and Troubleshooting
- Use Engine Fixes: The amount of damage you block with weapons in vanilla Skyrim increases with based on the attack rating of the weapon you are being attacked with, rather than the weapon you are blocking with, meaning stronger enemy weapons are easier to block. This bug is described here. This will apply when parrying since it is treated as blocking with a weapon. It is fixed by SSE Engine Fixes and Engine Fixes VR.
- VR: Parrying works in VR. You and your enemies' attacks will be treated as blocked. You will see the enemy's weapon bounce, but yours won't unless you use a mod like HIGGS or the various collision mods that use its framework.
- No known unexpected incompatibilities. Don't use alongside other mods adding similar features.
- Flagged as ESL
The mod suite
This mod was originally created as part of a large gameplay mechanics expansion mod that was designed to expand on under-used systems in Skyrim, bring back features from Morrowind and Oblivion, and implement features in a non-player-centric way to let NPCs use them. It's now standalone, but will play well with and have a similar design aesthetic as these mods that were also part of that suite:
- Aimshake - Stamina-Based Marksmanship
- Defense - Visible & Intuitive Damage Resistance
- Disguise - Simple Disguise System
- Dodge - Simple Dodging
- Dwarven Engineering - Craftable Controllable Automata
- Knockout - Health & Stealth Based KOs
- Followers - Simple Multiple Followers & Animals
- Magic & Necromancy Expansion
- Movement - Speed Tweaks & Stamina Costs
- Parry - Simple Weapon Parrying
- Racial Skills & Leveling
- Reflex - Contextual Slow Time in Combat
- Speechcraft & Yielding - Roleplaying and Non-Lethal Gameplay
- Toxicity - Potion Aftereffects
- Traps - Interactive, Craftable, and Moveable
- Unarmed - Damage Tweaks, Knockdowns, & Skill Progression
- Un/Lock - Lockpicking Requirements, Lock Smashing, and Spells
