Potions cause toxicity that creates consequences for potion use and rewards investment in Alchemy and Poison Resistance.
- Toxicity damages the same attributes or skills buffed by the potion taken. E.g., taking a Restore Health potion will slow Health Regeneration, taking a potion of Fire Resistance will cause Weakness to Fire, etc.
- Toxicity takes effect immediately after timed effects expire (for Fortify potions with durations), or after a short delay (for instant-effect Restore potions).
- Alchemy skill and Poison Resistance will both decrease the effects of potion toxicity, so leveling up Alchemy and using Poison Resistance enchantments will let you use potions more effectively (configurable). This makes Poison Resistance more important, and requires investment in Alchemy to use potions effectively.
- An added 2nd tier of the Snakeblood perk will turn stat and skill drains from toxicity into buffs. The original Snakeblood perk (50% resistance to poison) is untouched and contributes to toxicity resistance.
- Poison Resistance potions can be taken as a buffer before other potions to decrease their toxicity. However, they will cause their own toxicity after they expire which will reduce poison resistance, making other potions more toxic during this period. This gives Poison Resistance potions a use (they are almost useless in the vanilla game since so few enemies use poison), and makes Poison Resistance a more dynamic stat.
- Enemies will also experience potion toxicity if SPID is installed and you use a mod like NPCs Use Potions.
Requirements
- Required: SKSE or SKSE VR
- Recommended: SkyUI or SkyUI VR for the Mod Configuration Menu.
- Optional: a mod like NPCs Use Potions so NPCs can experience toxicity as well.
- Optional: SPID or SPID VR will make NPCs experience Toxicity. Requires a mod like NPCs Use Potions, will not cause them to consume potions by itself.
- Optional: SKSE Address Library or Address Library VR if using SPID or SPID VR to distribute features to NPCs (required for those mods).
Compatibility and Troubleshooting
- Will be compatible with mods that change the magnitudes or durations of vanilla potions from the base game (e.g., making all instant-effect potions restore over time) without a patch, since effects are calibrated when you load the game.
- Mods that add new potion types that affect stats not affected by potions in the base game will likely require a patch, but are safe to use: they just won't cause toxicity.
- Mods that edit the Snakeblood perk will prevent taking the perk that converts toxicity into benefits. It can also be added through the MCM though.
- No known unexpected incompatibilities. Don't use alongside other mods adding similar features.
- Flagged as ESL
The mod suite
This mod was originally created as part of a large gameplay mechanics expansion mod that was designed to expand on under-used systems in Skyrim, bring back features from Morrowind and Oblivion, and implement features in a non-player-centric way to let NPCs use them. It's now standalone, but will play well with and have a similar design aesthetic as these mods that were also part of that suite:
- Aimshake - Stamina-Based Marksmanship
- Defense - Visible & Intuitive Damage Resistance
- Disguise - Simple Disguise System
- Dodge - Simple Dodging
- Dwarven Engineering - Craftable Controllable Automata
- Knockout - Health & Stealth Based KOs
- Followers - Simple Multiple Followers & Animals
- Magic & Necromancy Expansion
- Movement - Speed Tweaks & Stamina Costs
- Parry - Simple Weapon Parrying
- Racial Skills & Leveling
- Reflex - Contextual Slow Time in Combat
- Speechcraft & Yielding - Roleplaying and Non-Lethal Gameplay
- Toxicity - Potion Aftereffects
- Traps - Interactive, Craftable, and Moveable
- Unarmed - Damage Tweaks, Knockdowns, & Skill Progression
- Un/Lock - Lockpicking Requirements, Lock Smashing, and Spells
