About this mod
Adds an option to purchase an upgrade for Riften Orphanage after Grelod is gone which overhauls the orphanage with new areas, activities and behaviors for the orphans. For example you can play games with them or give them gifts or enable chores around the orphanage. Many of the new options can be toggled on and off to your preference.

This mod is an overhaul/replacement of the Riften Honorhall Orphanage Upgraded (Lore Friendly) by lordmentat. The mod aims to improve the overall environment of Riften Orphanage for the orphans while making the orphanage seem more 'alive'. Riften Honorhall Orphanage Extended (RHOU) features a number of scripts which transfer new orphans to the new orphanage automatically while also providing the option to manually transfer urchins such as lucia/ sofie and other vanilla orphans to the new orphanage. The mod features a number of new areas which include their own new behaviors and ai packages.
Updates:
28/02/2025: Added Constance marriage compatible version. This version allows you to be married to Constance and toggle her working at the orphanage with an assistant taking over when Constance isn't working. Note that this version is an alternative/replacement to the original and CANNOT be installed alongside it or in a save where the original RHOUExtended has already been installed. It is still fine to install this version mid game.
What this mod does NOT do:
Change the vanilla adoption system in any way shape or form, orphaned children in the new orphanage can still be adopted. The vanilla orphanage system is 'redirected' as opposed to being remade
Change vanilla children at all– your skyrim adopted kids are still the same
How to start/use:
This mod can be installed mid-game.
Once the quest "Innocence Lost" has been completed, the option to speak to Constance and pay for the orphanage upgrade becomes available. (Note that for players who have already started/ finished adoptions this dialogue won't be available and instead you can start the upgrade through the 'RHOU Book of Options' or the RHOU MCM options) By default the cost to upgrade is 15000 gold and the time to upgrade is 7 days. The 'RHOU Book of Options' item or the RHOU MCM option page can be used to modify/ activate various aspects of the mod. Once the orphanage is upgraded, every 24 in-game hours the mod will search for new orphans and transfer them to the new orphanage if possible.
New Features List:
Added multiple optional/ toggle-able areas: Swimming Pool, Outdoor Pet area, Dog area (Torom/ Stump only) and training/sparring area
Added new behaviors/interactions: Play hide and seek or tag in the orphanage, give the orphans toys, sweets and books etc. Have the orphans cook and clean.
Increased orphanage capacity: The new orphanage can now support up to 16 orphans up from 12 (including samuel, runa etc)
Updated orphanage yard: Added chairs, a table and a number of interaction spots for orphans

Voicelines for constance and children when upgrading/sending to orphanage: Constance sounds like a machine and the kids don't have voicelines when sending them to the new orphanage.
Main Feature Details:
Swimming Pool (OPTIONAL): Adds a large swimming pool and a 'baby' pool to the lower area of the orphanage where children will spend time swimming, interacting with the water or just relaxing. Constance will watch over the children as they swim. The kids will go to the pool at 10am and finish at 12pm
Outdoor Pet Area (OPTIONAL): Adds orphanage pets in the form of a goat, two chickens and their shelters to the orphanage yard and an indoor rabbit. The children will have basic interactions with the pets
Dog Area (OPTIONAL): Adds an area for vanilla dogs to sleep in and well as some dog AI packages. Note that this is only for Torom/Stump if their owners are also in the orphanage
Training and Sparring Area (OPTIONAL) : Adds an area for children to practice and train with dummies and each other starting at 8pm everyday. They will automatically equip wooden swords if practicing with training dummies. Children are randomly selected for this activity and will vary from day to day.
Kid's Games: You can play either hide and seek or tag with the orphans by speaking with them and selecting the 'hello' dialogue option (reused from
vanilla system), children will hide (very poorly) and run around the orphanage chasing each other. This dialogue is disabled during studying and sleeping times.
Gifting: You can gifts to the orphans which will lead to different responses based on the value of what was given. Children will accept what adopted children would normally accept with the exception of actual weapons, wooden swords excluded. Gifts like clothing, books, dolls or wooden swords will make the children interact with those gifts.
Chores (Optional) : If chores are enabled up to two children will runoff to do chores and sweep starting at 10am until 1pm. Those same children will also be responsible for preparing and serving food starting at 4:30pm. Children are selected randomly for chores and will override any other activity they would have done.
Increased orphanage capacity: The new orphanage has more beds and more space for more orphans
Updated orphanage yard: At 12pm, up to a maximum of 8 children will go to the orphanage yard where Constance will supervise, the children will sit around, interact with some objects and sometimes interact with the pets if they are enabled.
Classroom and classroom packages: At 4pm everyday, Constance and the children will enter the classroom where children will listen to a lecture for 1 hour, afterwards they will get up and write, read or listen until 6pm
Added new AI packages to Constance and the orphans: Constance will now walk around the upper area of the orphanage and interact with objects. Children will roam around both levels of the orphanage and interact with objects
Added RHOU Book of Options to activate/toggle mod options and customize mod: This book will be added when the mod first starts and allows the changing or activation of various mod options. Functionally the same as the RHOU MCM options, just for anyone without SKYUI
RHOU Book of Options menu option descriptions:
The RHOU book of Options features four different menus which can be used to configure the mod. For most users, only pages one and two will need to be used with page 3 covering more niche options and page 4 covering move advanced options. Note that the options are shared with the MCM version and its largely a matter of personal preference which one you use. For obvious reasons, don’t deactivate an area/ activity while there are NPCs in those areas.
Menu 1:
Option 1: Used to set the price of the upgrade, set it before you start the upgrade
Option 2: Changes the time of the upgrade, from 0 days to 20+ days
Option 3: Forces the orphanage upgrade, which removes the upgrade gold cost from the players gold. Use this option if you have started/ finished adoptions and Constance doesn’t offer the
dialogue to upgrade

Option 2: Toggle Send to Orphanage Spell: Enables/Disables a spell which can be used to send suitable orphans to the new orphanage,
functionally the same as the dialogue but cooler
Option 3: Toggle Send dog to orphanage spell: Enables/Disables a spell which can be used to send Torom/ Stump to the new orphanage if their owners are orphaned. Won’t work on any other dogs. Really niche function.
Option 4: Stop children saying stupid dog: Children for whatever reason have the default behaviour of abusing any and all dogs that don’t directly belong to them, this changes that so they say ‘good dog’ to torom and/or stump instead. This works for children currently in the orphanage and needs to be reapplied if more orphans arrive
Option 5: Clear RHOU dog packages:SUPER niche function, if you adopt the owners of torom/ stump after torom/stump are sent via spell to the new orphanage, the dogs will stay there unless you use this option
Option 6: Toggle Set as Orphan Spell: Enables/Disables a spell which can be used to set the status of pretty much any child as an orphan. This includes balgruuf’s kids and other ‘children’ like babette. The purpose for this spell is mostly for modded children that still use the same voices as vanilla children so that they can be sent to the new orphanage.
Option 7: Forgotten Children check: checks the orphan status of mila, haming, grimvar and kayd, and transfers them to RHOU. Credit goes to subhuman0100 for the idea

Option 2: Move missing orphans:Very rarely, orphans can get stuck and not move to new orphanage despite becoming part of it. This will move all of those orphans to the new orphanage
Option 3: Manually remove adopted/dead children from RHOU allowing more to move in. Only needed for niche cases and if updates are turned off
Option 4: Manually run the process for identifying orphans and transfer them to the new orphanage. Only needed for niche cases and if updates are turned off
Option 5: Sometimes children will end up in the new orphanage but won’t have the games or gift dialogue, use this option to fix
Option 6: Turns on/off update messages
Option 7: Turns automatic updates on and off, is on by default and only required if you don’t need automatic updates because you are certain there won’t be any new orphans/ don’t care if there are new orphans or if the update system is causing lag

Installation:
Use Vortex, or if installing manually just drop the bsa and esp files into your data folder after unzipping.
Uninstall:
Not recommended mid-game, otherwise use a mod manager or manually delete the files
Known-issues:
Animation issues- Children may ‘pop-up’ from some furniture, children playing with dolls turn sometimes invisible, dolls being played with sometimes fly off on their own , children wont put on shoes after being given clothing (vanilla bug- wait 24 hours to fix), children may clip through dining furniture
Pathfinding- More children in then orphanage can lead to pathing issues/ children getting stuck
Troubleshooting:
Q: The children aren't doing XYZ activity!
A: The children have their activities decided at 9am each day by Constance, this includes going to the yard, training and chores. If you activate one of those activities AFTER 9am those activities won't actually start until the starting time on the next day. This also means if Constance is dead for whatever reason, the kids won't do much. If she is dead you can use the following to resurrect her:

Q: I have improved adoptions installed and the children aren't talking much
A: I'm not sure on this one but it seems the more children there are in the orphanage the less likely they are going to talk
Q: Is this compatible with XYZ?
A: i limited what this mod changed to improve compatibility but I'm honestly not sure, i don't run alot of mods myself and my compatibility knowledge is limited at best.
Q: A child is stuck in the pool!
A: Don't worry this isn't the sims, this usually happens if you skipped time while they were in the pool, they will leave normally during most hours or just fast travel and return
Q: Can you do XYZ?
A: Probably not, I've invested way too much time into this and barring any significant interest or incentive i probably wont
For modders taking a close look at the files:
This is my first time using papyrus, I expect a lot of inefficiencies/ redundancies and outright incorrect usage for some things. I spent a great deal of time testing but its a given that some things slip through. For whatever reason at the time I absolutely insisted that I implement the random control functions via papyrus and while they have a bit more functionality than if implementing it via condition getrandompercent it was barely anything. If anyone has any questions regarding why I did a script in a particular way your best answer is in whatever notes I may have left in the code itself. This mod has taken far too long and I’ve forgotten many of the reasons why I did anything. If you have questions regarding design or how I implemented things I can try and answer, but again those answers may be lost.
