About this mod

TNT is a remesh, retexture and resize of the two original troll types from Skyrim, with the goal of making them look more accurate to Scandinavian fairytales. Frost trolls become mountain trolls, and cave trolls become forest trolls.

For those wanting a standalone version: that is beyond my level of expertise at this moment, so until I know more about modding, I recommend downloading this mod, which also incorporates the models and textures from TNT - True Nordic Trolls if you have those installed:
Troll Variance

The original simple retexture from Oldrim has been reworked into a full remesh and retexture to really make Skyrim's trolls actually look like the trolls of their fairytale origins. I am still experimenting a bit with adding hair and more foliage to these guys, but I'm still very inexperienced at rigging 3D models with the proper bones, so for now, this is the mod. It might be updated to look more impressive in the future, but no promises.
This mod also makes the trolls twice as large as they normally are. This means they look more menacing, but it also means they might occasionally get stuck on the environment. If you want them back to normal size, just delete the ESP, as it only resizes them, they still keep the new appearance without it.
This mod only affects frost trolls and cave trolls, not armoured trolls.

Skyrim's trolls have always been disappointing for Scandinavians to look at, as they don't really bear any resemblance to the original trolls from our fairytales whatsoever. The stories of trolls have become kind of muddled through the translations and the many half-hearted attempts at them by Hollywood and video games, to the point where most people outside of Scandinavia just think trolls are a generic "big and ugly" creature that's more or less interchangable with ogres, giants, goblins, and so on. This is a shame, because trolls are actually a pretty interesting and unique fairytale creature, one which is closely tied into Scandinavian history in relation to pre-Christian traditions.

This mod brings the true Nordic trolls into the game, primarily based on fairytale illustrations from the Norwegian painter Theodor Kittelsen.

Part of the confusion for people, I think, comes from the fact that trolls are a very varied creature, described in many different ways, but there are still some defining characteristics that are found in every single depiction of them. These are:
-Trolls are usually big, with the exception of Danish trolls, which are usually human-sized or smaller, while Norwegian and Swedish trolls can be as big as mountains.
-Trolls always have big ears and big noses, and typically resemble extremely old men and women with very wrinkly faces. They sort of fall into the uncanny valley, because trolls look like us, but a strange and unfamiliar version of us, and their behaviour is savage and cruel, and they cannot be reasoned with. That's what makes them scary.
-Trolls are personifications of nature, and represent a more ancient world that still hasn't been conquered by civilisation. Most trolls are so ancient that they have moss, mushrooms and even trees growing on them, which helps them blend in with their surroundings despite their massive sizes. It's pretty common for the hero of a fairytale to walk onto a hill or mountain, only to realise it's actually a troll.
-Trolls typically turn to stone or explode in sunlight, though there are exceptions to this, such as the Danish trolls which are usually portrayed as being unaffected by the sun.
-Trolls hate Christianity (not really relevant to Skyrim, of course), most likely because they symbolically represent the pre-Christian Norse traditions, carrying over a lot of the traits of the Norse stories of jotnar, and so they are in a way "the old world fighting back".
-Trolls are usually covered in hair, and many of them have tails with tufts at the end, similar to lion tails.
These are the defining characteristics of trolls. Beyond that, there's a lot of variation. Some trolls are clever, some are stupid. Most are cruel, but some are not. Some trolls aren't even ugly, particularly the younger ones which can sometimes almost pass for human until you look closer.
Although their names stay the same, cave trolls now have the appearance of classical Norwegian forest trolls, while the frost trolls look like mountain trolls. Those who have seen the Norwegian horror comedy film Troll Hunter will be familiar with these designs.

These models were actually created just by editing the vanilla troll meshes, which means the animations work great, but certain parts of the trolls, particularly the tails, have weird-looking textures, but it's not too noticable. Originally these were gonna be models made by combining the trolls, giants and a bunch of plant meshes, but I had trouble rigging them properly and just ended up with these Slenderman-looking monstrosities, so this is the second best alternative. This means that this mod should also be compatible with any mod that alters troll animations.

If anyone wants to rework this, they have my permission to do so, so long as they credit me in the mod description.

Big thanks to the team behind Outfit Studio, as this mod wouldn't exist without it.
