If you're anything like me, the counter-intuitive enchantment of Skyrim's Ebony Mail seemed like a strange and unnecessary departure from what had previously been seen in the series. Rather than a top-tier cuirass with enchantments to help heavy armor-based characters tank physical and magical hits, we were given a piece of armor which allowed heavily armored characters to more effectively sneak, which was something that nobody asked for. I created this as a plugin for personal use, but decided I may as well share it since most of the mods focusing on this sort of thing are confined to the original Skyrim nexus. This mod rebalances the Ebony Mail in the following ways:
Base armor rating increased from 46 to 50 (1 point above Daedric)
Resist Fire 50%
Resist Magic 25%
Fortify Armor Rating 50 pts
Playing on my personal save with Ordinator installed, with 100 Heavy Armor and relevant boosting perks, a full set of unupgraded Ebony Armor+Ebony Mail provided an armor rating of 441, while a full set of unupgraded Daedric Armor provided an armor rating of 444. The enchantment was tweaked from the Morrowind version (75% fire/20% Magic) to fit a wider variety of races, since Dark Elf characters would find some of the Resist Fire effect to be redundant.
The boosted version is certainly more powerful than in vanilla, so if balance is a concern, I recommend installing Timing is Everything SE and increasing the level requirement for 'Boethiah's Calling' to around the Level 40 mark. Furthermore, I highly recommend the Amidianborn 2K Gold textures for both the Ebony Mail and the Ebony Armor to give them a style which is more similar to what was seen in Morrowind and Oblivion, and which actually fits their weapons.
