Seamless and configurable integration of previous games' soundtracks with Skyrim

This mod integrates the soundtracks of the main previous Elder Scrolls games with Skyrim's
Tracks have been carefully selected for different regions, times of day, and story moments to work as a seamless extension of Skyrim's soundtrack, or a total replacer if you prefer
Each game's soundtrack, use of sound effects, and whether they will play during story moments is customizable in-game
Arena and Daggerfall's old-school soundtracks have been resynthesized from the original files for a more modern sound that integrates well with Skyrim's score
Music from Arena and Daggerfall are included as downloads here
For Morrowind and Oblivion, you must convert and provide your own music files; instructions below

INSTALLATION
---------------------------------------------------------------------

PROCESS

1. Download the main file.
2. Download the Arena and Daggerfall soundtracks from the 'Optional Files' section. The main downloads are in high-quality WAV format. The 'XWM' downloads' have smaller file sizes at the cost of lower quality. I have provided these since Bethesda has made the games available for free on their website and Steam.
If you want to use the soundtracks from Morrowind and Oblivion:
3. Download a copy of Morrowind or Oblivion through Steam, GOG, install from a disc, wherever. If you are using copies of the soundtrack files from somewhere other than the original game, you will need to make sure that the file name of each track matches the ones from the installs of the games.
4. Copy all the .mp3 file's from each game's 'Data/Music' folder into a single, separate folder for each game titled 'Morrowind' or 'Oblivion', and allow any duplicate tracks (e.g. there are multiple copies of Morrowind's 'Title Theme.mp3' file in separate subfolders) to overwrite each other, you don't need multiple copies. Images of what the file structures should look like are included here.
5. Convert the .MP3s to .WAV or .XWM files using a program like Audacity or Yakitori Audio Converter. Skyrim cannot play MP3s, so they must be converted. WAV files will match the quality of the MP3s but with large file sizes, XWMs will be smaller but lower-quality.
6. Place each game's folder into your Skyrim/Data/Music folder, manually or by zipping them into an archive and installing with your mod manager. The final install paths should be: 'Skyrim Special Edition/Data/Music/[Morrowind or Oblivion]/(all the music files).


COMPATIBILITY
  • Any mod that adds new music tracks through an .esp file will need a patch, since this mod touches every soundtrack in Skyrim and its expansions
  • Mods that replace existing music tracks (generally those that come without an .esp) do not need a patch
  • If you don't like a particular track, you can delete its file and it will skip automatically in game
  • If you have another song or recording of the same song you'd like to play instead, change its file name to match the track you want to replace and put it in the folder for the game it comes from; the game will play whatever song matches the filename at the appropriate time in game

  • Copies of Morrowind or Oblivion if you want to use those soundtracks

INTEGRATION WITH SKYRIM'S SOUNDTRACK
Each game's soundtracks have been set to play in locations and times of day that most closely match Skyrim's original score. Each region will have more personality when using more soundtracks:
  • Tundras and canyons: bright horns, driving percussion
  • Mountains and snowy regions: frosty choruses and stinging bells
  • Forests: swelling strings, bright pianos and harps
  • Marshes: somber brass and ominous strings. Note: Hjaalmarch does not have its own soundtrack region set in Skyrim's soundtrack and instead uses the Reach soundtrack, even though there is an unimplemented 'Marsh' soundtrack in the game. This mod does not change that since it would require editing world data and create potential conflicts. This is possible to patch and I may look into it for a future version.
Many songs will only play at morning, dusk, or night
Some songs will play based on weather conditions: sun, rain, or snow
The configuration menu has options to turn off Skyrim's soundtrack (exploration, dungeon, town, and combat music), effects (the short tracks that play at gameplay moments like leveling up, discovering a new location, etc.), story music (tracks that play at key moments of the main story), and 'spacers' (moments of silence programmed in the original soundtrack, which can be turned off to make songs play continuously)


ARENA
  • Retro charm but fits acceptably into Skyrim's soundtrack
  • A medium-sized and diverse soundtrack of 33 songs with: ambient, dungeon, and town music, combat music, sound effects for moments like discovering a town or dungeon or leveling up, and tracks that play at suitable moments of the main story
  • Because of this, it can be used as a full replacer by turning off Skyrim's soundtrack through the configuration menu
  • Because of the small number of tracks, it can get repetitive if used as a replacer, so I recommend including Daggerfall's soundtrack as well


DAGGERFALL
  • Similar retro charm as Arena, but many of the compositions are more modern and fit well into Skyrim's soundtrack
  • A large soundtrack of 74 songs with: ambient, dungeon, and town music, combat music, and tracks that play at suitable moments of the main story
  • Most tracks will only play in specific regions and times of day so that they don't overpower Skyrim's soundtrack, but they will play frequently (comparable to the frequency of Skyrim's original tracks) due to how many of them there are. If you find specific songs are playing too frequently or don't fit your vision for the game, you can prevent them from playing by deleting their files or changing their filenames (e.g. leaving them in their folder but adding an 'X' or '_' to their name), which will make the game automatically skip them
  • Because Daggerfall lacks music for milestones like leveling up, discovering a dungeon, etc., I recommend using it alongside Arena if you want to use it as a full soundtrack replacer


MORROWIND
  • Integrates seamlessly with the Skyrim soundtrack
  • A small soundtrack of 17 songs, including: ambient and combat music, the iconic title theme, and tracks that play on leveling up or dying
  • Most songs will play at morning or dusk, and in cities or towns
  • Lacks tracks that fit dungeons, towns, and story milestones, so recommended as an addition rather than a full replacer
  • Because Morrowind's soundtrack is so iconic, mellower than Skyrim's, and already partially included in Dragonborn, there is an option to have Morrowind's tracks play only during Dragonborn (i.e. on Solstheim)
  • Tracks originally from Morrowind in the Dragonborn DLC will continue to play regardless of whether Morrowind's soundtrack is installed, unless the Skyrim soundtrack is deactivated
  • The title theme and specific songs may play during key events of the Dragonborn DLC


OBLIVION
  • Integrates seamlessly with the Skyrim soundtrack
  • A medium-sized soundtrack of 28 songs, including: ambient, dungeon, and town music, combat music, sound effects for moments like discovering a town or dungeon or leveling up, and tracks that play at suitable moments of the main story
  • Can be used as a replacer for or addition to Skyrim's soundtrack
