About this mod

These creatures are the carrion eaters of abandoned dungeons, crypts, and other burial places. They feast on human corpses and other rotting flesh. Although they are not intelligent, they have a natural cunning that aids them in finding food. Because of their vile habits, ghouls have a chance of transmitting diseases to those they bite.

"Ghouls are small, olive-colored daedra that roam abandoned dungeons and crypts and feed on corpses. These creatures generally pose little threat and are cowardly, living exclusively in search of rotten food. Although they will attack intruders who enter their lairs, they will also easily retreat from combat if outmatched. To attack, Ghouls use their long, sharp claws as an offensive instrument and, as a consequence of their habit of feeding on corpses, such scratches are capable of transmitting diseases, especially Necrophage Fever. Ghouls are low-powered creatures, but should not be underestimated by inexperienced and poorly equipped explorers: their attacks do not have enough damage to kill an enemy in a few hits, but in groups they can overwhelm their victims. However, as an adventurer gains more experience, Ghouls become a lesser enemy.

Ghouls are about as strong as a weak Goblin, and are among the weakest of the Necrophages. Necrophages are carrion-eating daedra who serve the Daedric Prince Namira, infesting the most rotten places in the Scuttling Void. On Nirn, in addition to dungeons, they often haunt cemeteries and battlefields, places where corpses lie dead, to eat their remains, even desecrating graves in cities that are poorly protected against invaders. Some, however, have decided to have no qualms about being the ones who fill the area with corpses, instead of being just carrion crows feasting on the already dead. Like all other Necrophages, Ghouls also appear to be made of decaying matter and exude the same terrible odor as rotting meat does. Necrophages, despite being daedra, share many characteristics with the undead, being generally immune to poison and disease, and extremely vulnerable to light and fire. Their existence lives in a limbo between the powerful essence of an immortal daedra and the depressing decay of mortals.

Ghouls are especially common in ancient Nordic tombs, where they are generally accepted by the Draugr. Ghouls do not attempt to consume their mummified flesh as it has long since lost the characteristics that make flesh succulent for a Necrophage, so they simply devour the carcasses of tomb raiders who are eventually killed by the Draugr. Ghouls are therefore tolerated because they serve as caretakers in the ruins, leaving only the bones of the raiders, who are then often revived by the Draugr themselves, to serve as skeletal guards. Because of this, Ghouls are common in almost all Nordic ruins, except for Solstheim, where legend has it that the light of the All-Maker prevents these foul creatures from proliferating on the island.

Necrophages were once a rarity, but in the current age of constant war and violence they have become a veritable plague, particularly around battlefields and in areas affected by disease and death. Due to the extreme aggressiveness and unpredictable behavior of Necrophages, other daedra or carrion animals rarely approach them, which also explains why they are rarely summoned by magicians as well, and certainly the terrible smell of rotting carrion that they exude is another very valid reason. Even Ghouls, being small, fragile and cowardly scavengers, generally avoid at all costs the places where other superior Necrophages have made their nests, to avoid being eaten by them.

Necrophages appear to be completely unbound in their existence on Nirn, as it is very rare to see a mage summoning them in battle or controlling them in any way, as the source of their presence. Scholars believe that they enter the mortal world through dark portals hidden in the deepest, darkest caverns of Skyrim, opened by the most unholy of evil cultists, and connected to the Scuttling Void, the daedric realm of Namira from which the necrophagous abominations hail, and which have long remained open uninterrupted since immemorial times, serving as a continuous bridge that allows the Necrophages to proliferate each day more, over the centuries."
