2 versions:
1) enchanted like dragonbane, stuck in the Eldergleam
2) not enchanted, craftable
both temperable and ESL
In the Völsunga saga the sword Gramr is thrust into the tree Barnstokkr by Odin. The only one able to pull it out was Sigmund, son of Völsung. The (reforged) sword is later used by his son Sigurd to kill the dragon Fafnir.
And now it somehow made its way to Tamriel, and is stuck in a tree again – the Eldergleam. Did Shor put it there? The All-Maker? Did the Godhead read the saga before going to bed? Nobody knows…
But wait, isn’t the Eldergleam impervious to metal weapons? A literal god put it there (probably), stop asking.
As a base I used a slightly altered version of my Migration/Vendel period sword, as that is fitting for the time period the saga plays in. As far as the inscriptions go I stuck with the time it was written down (so Old Norse and Younger Futhark), as reconstructing it all in Proto-Norse/Germanic is a little bit out of the scope of a Skyrim mod.
The runic inscriptions on the grip are the names of the sword's legendary previous owners, the inscription on the upper and lower guard is what Odin said, after thrusting the sword into Barnstokkr.
The runes on the blade say „Gramr“(„wrath“, name of the sword), and „Fáfnisbani“(„Fafnir's Bane/Fafnir-slayer“), Sigurd's epithet and also fitting for the sword itself.
The double-stacked týr-rune on the pyramid pommel is inspired by the Eddic poem Sigrdrífumál, in which Sigrdrífa explains the use of victory runes to Sigurd:
“Victory runes you must know
if you will have victory,
and
carve them on the sword's hilt,
some on the grasp
and some
on the inlay,
and name Tyr twice.”
the last line is usually interpreted as carving two (or more) t-runes (stacking them as a bindrune is just a more compact way to do the same).
The scabbard depicts wood carvings from the Hylestad Stave Church. The metal fitting depicts Regin forging a sword (it’s technically not Gramr, but one of the unsuccessful attempts before that – but I won’t tell anyone if you don’t). The inlay on the leather shows Sigurd slaying Fafnir.
Lastly, on the chape is a simple HF bindrune for Hrodeberht’s Forge. ;)
Now to the mod itself: Gramr, as the weapon of a legendary dragon-slayer, is just as strong as the best leveled variant of Dragonbane, with the same enchantment, and can of course be tempered. (plugin with unenchanted Gramr under optional files)
I also made a light variant that just adds an unenchanted version of Gramr to the crafting menu.
All versions flagged ESL.
