"Aicantar's Spider is a Dwarven spider that Aicantar reassembled and can control with his spider control rod. Picking up the spider control rod in Calcelmo's Laboratory will cause it to pop out of a Dwarven scuttle. It will try to kill anyone who is hostile to the holder of the rod. The rod works like a staff, and the spider will move to the location targeted by the rod.
According to Aicantar's journal, found nearby, the guards are afraid of it because of several incidents where Aicantar would become mad at a guard, or a guard would draw a weapon and the spider would try to kill them. It cannot leave Calcelmo's Laboratory."
After completion of the quest 'Hard Answers' (Thieves' Guild), This Spider Control Rod will be available to you. Equipping it will upgrade it to an alternate form; Dwarven Control Rod - Hacked.
You will be able to use it to re-construct broken Dwarven Automatons, and also attempt to override the aggression of Automatons if they are still in full functionality. Your hacking attempt will only succeed if you have a 'Centurion Dynamo Core - Hacked' in your inventory.
These are acquired by collecting Dwarven Scrap Metal, which is most commonly found in Dwarven ruins. When firing the Dwarven Control Rod, any Dwarven Scrap Metal in your inventory will be transmuted into Dwarven Ingots, and firing a second time will transmute any Dwarven Ingots into Centurion Dynamo Core - Hacked.
If you do not have a hacked centurion dynamo core in your inventory, your health will be damaged by 99 points, and any calmed automatons will revert to their aggressive state.
This staff is clearly powerful, and makes traversing Dwarven Ruins a lot easier to do, although the reduced risk is offset by the requirement to feed the control rod with dwarven scrap metal, so pay attention and make sure you do not run out!
Un-equipping the Dwarven Control Rod will reset any faction changes applied via use of the control rod.
Good luck, explorer of dwarven ruins!
NOTE: Please ensure you are using Version 0.2 as it does not allow the control rod's processes to trigger when using dwarven ingots or dwemer clutter at smelters.
