About this mod
A lightweight, highly compatible overhaul of the crafting recipes for Creation Club backpacks.
- Requirements
- Permissions and credits
- Changelogs
- go from ESP to ESL for the vanilla stats version
Idea for a future project : further overhaul with multiple upgrade tiers. Not sure when or if it'll be a thing. Will be a separate mod page.
Introduction :
This mod aims to make the Creation Club backpacks crafting more coherent and rebalanced. The goal is to get to an "enhanced & mildy harder vanilla" experience.
It also removes them from leveled lists so they can only be acquired through crafting (modifed stats version only)
All adjustment/tweaking/addition suggestions welcome !
More coherent crafting
Each basic (leather / fur / dark / fine) CC backpack actually share its look with an advanced (adventurer / hunter / thief / mage) backpack. So it only made sense to me to obtain these advanced backpacks through the upgrade of the basic ones.
Now basic backpacks aren't useless anymore, and it makes the choice of which basic backpack to craft more meaningful, since each basic backpack has a distinct potential to unlock. It also makes the crafting more coherent (the vanilla recipes won't allow you to craft a mage backpack + bedroll using an already existing mage backpack, for instance)
A basic backpack can get 2 cumulative upgrades : add stuff to upgrade to its advanced version, or add a bedroll. These upgrades can be made in any order, without making any difference on the total materials needed. It results in this simple crafting tree :

Note that that every "advanced + bedroll" backpack will have 2 recipes in the crafting menu (one for each upgrade path)
Reworked and rebalanced recipes
The vanilla backpacks of same quality all have the same cheap recipe. Yet it doesn't make sense, for instance, to get a backpack with a magic boost without adding mage stuff to it; also I felt they were way too easy to get.
Now the different basic backpack recipes and upgrades to advanced will require different materials.
I've tried to balance each recipe to make sense regarding the use/look of each backpack, and to make each craft a bit more of an accomplishment; after all, if you want to get all the upgraded backpacks, now you'll only need to craft each basic backpack or upgrade once.
Don't worry, the required materials are still pretty much at early game level, but some are unusual and so will take a bit of effort to get.
The new recipes are :
Leather : 4 leathers, 10 leather straps
Adventurer : leather backpack + 5 torches, 10 paper rolls, 1 charcoal (torches to get light, paper and charcoal to take notes while adventuring)
Fur : 1 fox pelt, 1 wolf pelt, 1 deer hide**, 5 leather straps
Hunter : fur backpack + 1 hunter bow, 50 steel arrows, 1 steel dagger (spare hunting gear; dagger to skin/butcher animals)
Dark : 4 leathers, 5 leather straps, 5 charcoals
Thief : dark backpack + 50 lockpicks, 1 stealth potion*, 1 lockpicking potion* (lockpicking supplies)
Fine : 4 leathers, 5 leather straps, 1 gold ingot, 1 flawless garnet
Mage : fine backpack + 5 magicka potions* + 5 filled petty soul gems* (basic magic supplies)
Bedroll : 2 deer hide**, 5 linen wrap. Same for all backpacks.
*Note that the required potions / soul gems must be the one that are directly bought or found, it won't work with player-crafted/filled ones. The materials needed for the crafting are tricky to get on purpose !
**The light-colored ones you get from deers, not elks.
I may change these as it may be a bit confusing to know which exact material you need for the crafting. I try to keep the required materials "tricky to get yet not high level", but it'd be better with ones that are easier to recognize without error.
Compatibility : The base mod only changes the crafting recipes and not the backpack stats, so it should be compatible with any mod that change them. It doesn't change any name either, so it should be compatible with any language.
Modified stats (alternative standalone version)
This version keeps the overhauled crafting but also rebalance the stats of the backpacks in a coherent and gameplay-friendly way.
The main goals were :
- increase the value of the backpacks, both because of the required méterials, and to grant more smithing xp
- have a coherent weight progression; adding stuff to your backpack to upgrade it makes it heavier
- make the bedroll give a stat bonus, so it's not just a purely cosmetic addition, and allow to overcome the penalty from the extra weight advanced backpacks get
- make the backpacks somewhat heavy to prevent keeping all backpacks in inventory to switch them constantly. Now an unused backpack will be a burden, so get one for your trip and leave the others at home !
New stats (see image gallery):
basic : weight 10, carry weight + 35 (net bonus 25), value 150 gold
basic + bed roll : weight 15, carry weight + 45 (net bonus 30), value 300 gold
advanced : weight 15, carry weight + 35 (net bonus 20), value 300 gold
advanced + bedroll : weight 20, carry weight + 45 (net bonus 25), value 500 gold
Also reduced thief backpack bonus from +15% lockpicking to +10%.
Compatibility : will conflict with any other mod changing backpack stats / effect, and backpack-specific leveled lists. ENG and FR versions provided.
