Original Description:
.: Overview :.
Normally, while using a custom hairstyle, your character goes bald when they put a helmet or hood on. Until now, your options to actively approach this problem were limited to letting hair clip through, use a especially made wig or simply turn headgear invisible. Helm Hair is a very simple and lightweight script-based alternative that allows you to give your character a vanilla hairstyle to show under headgear. Everything is done under the hood (pun intended) using only events and existing resources. There's no script polling or constant magic effects that could hit performance and no use of additional menus or configuration spells.
.: Requirements :.
Skyrim Script Extender (SKSE)
Keyword Item Distribution (KID)
.: Compatibility :.
Compatible with:
All custom hair mods available (Apachii, KS Hairdos, SaLa, Yundao... you name it), including versions with physics enabled.
Animation mods related to hair or headgear, such as Let Your Hair Down (LYHD) and Read The Room (RTR).
- Keep in mind while setting up LYHD that only the last hair you set - up or down - will be registered as your main hair.
- To avoid issues with lowered hoods, add RTR to the exclusion list in INI file (Keyword = HelmHair_Excluded|Armor|ReadTheRoom.esp).
Possible conflicts:
Any items with ArmorHelmet or ClothingHead keywords will trigger hair changes.
- You can edit HelmHair_KID.ini to exclude or include items, mods or keywords according to your needs.
Incompatible with:
Equipment manager mods that work without actually (un)equipping items, such as Equipment Toggle 2 and Dynamic Lowered Hoods.
- Helm Hair is unable to understand if an item was simply turned invisible or if its armor addons got replaced.
.: Installation :.
Download and install Helm Hair as normal. Load order doesn't matter.
To uninstall later on a playthrough, do as instructed ahead.
.: Usage :.
- Upon installation, your character's current hairstyle is saved as their main hair.
- Then, anytime you select a vanilla hairstyle in race menu, it will become your character's helm hair.
- Likewise, you can change your character's main hair by selecting a custom hairstyle in race menu. - From now on, any helmet or hood is going to work as a toggle key between both hairstyles.
- The main hair shows up when headgear is off, while the helm hair shows up when headgear is on.
- Enter race menu.
- Select the same vanilla hairstyle you're currently using as helm hair.
- Leave race menu to see a message pop up. Click OK to begin uninstall.
- Wait a few seconds until a confirmation appears. Save and quit the game.
- Remove Helm Hair from your mod list.
- Load and save the game once more. This time you don't have to quit.
- Clean up that save file. I recommend you use ReSaver and follow their instructions.
- Load the clean save and keep playing!
.: Known Issues :.
Slight delay on hair replacement.
- The Papyrus functions provided by SKSE are fast, but not as fast as the engine.
- Workaround : The more your helm hair resembles your main hair, the less noticeable is the issue.
Mod doesn't work on horseback.
- This is necessary to avoid a bug with one of the required SKSE functions.
- Workaround : It will get back to work after you dismount and equip headgear again.
Mod doesn't work on vampires.
- Just an engine limitation related to templated actors that SKSE didn't get around.
- Workaround : Curing your character from vampirism will bring the mod back to life as well.
- Warning! To avoid headaches, don't let your character become vampire while wearing headgear.
.: Recommendations :.
