About this video

I run just over 300 mods.
Many of which are landscape related and use 4K textures.
Running Rudy ENB with all effects active.
Running on a glorious 1080p 1920x1080 60Hz monitor with 4ms refresh rate. :P

So I wondered....Exactly how much VRAM was my game using?
Top left shows GPU temp GPU usage
GPU memory usage GPU dedicated memory
Framerate

Using a mod called Mist Flight with 25% increased speed to quickly load new areas testing a 'worse case' of actual game play on VRAM.

Verdict:
Takes 12-15GB VRam to run this setup.

Many people go for the higher clock speeds, and higher memory speeds over amount of VRAM.
While both those are important also the bottleneck for Skyrim running high resolution textures on a large scale is not the core or memory clocks but the amount of available VRAM

Hope this was informational or at least fun to watch. :)

I don't understand all of the lingo, but the views in the video were amazing. Great job I guess, LOL. Congrats Nico.

  Was mainly curious about how much mods with 4K textures play a role in usage of system resources.
  Not everyone can afford a new system so how does one get the very most from the system they have and still have a heavily modded and beautiful game?
  
  Just ran another test (video uploading currently) monitoring cpu usage, system ram usage, VRAM and GPU usage during typical game play.
  The goal is to provide people with the knowledge they need to have a beautiful Skyrim on the hardware they have that runs and loads smooth.
  
  What I found was CPU usage was around 10%
  So if you have a decent at least dual core processor even from 10 years ago it’s not going to hinder your game play.
  
  System Ram usage was right around 10GB
  So if you have 10 or more GB of system ram that won’t be the bottleneck either. I was able to get it to run smooth on 12GB of DDR2 on the last rig.
  
  Here’s the important part.
  VRAM
  Running 4K texture files for all the mods I have installed was using 10-15 GB of VRAM
  Running 2k texture files for all the mods (pretty much same load order) used about 5-6 GB of VRAM
  I am guessing if you ran 1024 textures it would use 1-3 GB of VRAM
  
  Now this isn’t saying that you can’t run all 4K textures on a card with 2GB of VRAM
  you can
  but it’s gonna stutter something fierce and frame rate is going to tank as it tries to load more files than it has space for.
  
  However there is little visual difference between 2k and 4K textures during normal game play.
  yes there is a difference when really close to objects but how often are you looking at things close enough to fill your whole screen during regular play?
  Also as I found out when playing with sharpening shaders in reshade the game adds blur to smooth the image out, and avoid flicker of textures when looking around quickly.
  So even the videos you see that are ‘4K’ are not rendering the 4K textures at their true resolution.
  Its not because the screen can’t do it or that the textures aren’t 4K. They can and are. It’s the game engine that’s blurring it to effectively a lower resolution.
  
  That being said
  If your system has enough VRAM to play smoothly without stutter with all 4K textures then by all means do it.
  But if you have 6 GB of VRAM I recommend 2K textures on your mods. The visual difference during normal game play is hard to see the difference but the lack of stutter as the game loads is very noticeable.
  Same goes for if you have a 2GB card.
  Running your mods at 1k textures will provide you much smoother game play.even if you have 300 mods installed like I do.
  
  so it comes down to what’s more important to you.
  a smooth playing game or extreme up close detail.
  
  you decide.

What mod enabled such travel? Wait, it says Mist Flight.

  Yes, the mod is called Mist Flight (like HP).
  Its a fun alternative to fast travel but also a good way to totally saturate your VRAM usage since because of its speed the game needs to load new areas quickly.
  
  I don’t normally travel this way during regular game play. It is very possible to enter new grids before the game can load resources into VRAM leaving you in a barren landscape until it can load.
  
  as you can see it requires just a ton of VRAM to load. Between 10-15GB in this video.
  
  However the speed is MCM configurable and if you’re not running a bunch of 4K textures it’s possible to do with about 6GB of VRAM.
  
  I was able to run it on a 1060 GTX with 6GB of VRAM using 2k textures (videos of that on my VT channel). With almost the exact same load order.
  
  I know many mods offer 4K textures as an option but made this video to show the resources needed to run the game smoothly if you decide to go that route.
  
  with 2k textures the VRAM usage was around 5GB average. With 4K textures is around 11-12GB average.
  
  Another thing to consider is that the game applies a blur filter to keep textures from flickering when looking around quickly.
  Sort of smooths things out.
  So even if you have the 4x larger textures installed the image difference while playing is really minimal between 2k and 4K because of this blur filter.
  
  Lastly this was run at 1080p and 60hz
  ~~double~~ (correction ‘quadruple’) the amount of pixels the game needs to render from 1920x1080 to 3840x2160 and lose half your FPS.
  Yes the newer Graphics cards could do it at 4K resolution but a higher refresh rate would be a moot point if it can’t run at above 60FPS.
  
  I can see the draw of a 4K 144hz monitor especially for first person shooters that could run at 200+ FPS at 1080p
  The higher refresh rate would eliminate ghosting and screen tear and with headroom on FPS it makes sense.
  For my modded Skyrim however It didn’t make sense.
  I would rather keep 60 FPS at 1080p than play at 30fps and 4K that my old eyes (and the games blur filter) can’t see anyway.
