GSC has fixed this crash in their next patch. After they called out the root cause of the crash, someone else went ahead and copied my mod here and introduced a fix that handles the Weird Bolt bug.
I guess I'll let them take the reins on that? I'd rather put my energy elsewhere, so stay tuned. ECH will turn into another emission related mod here soon. I'm glad the mod was able to help some, and thankful for all the input, testing, and feedback from you all!
thanks for the mod I would like to uninstall the mod. I deleted the file, but it seems that the changes made to the emissions are still active. How can I restore the original settings? Thank you
This seems to be a side-effect of the modding scene for now. Some mods that alter configurations can stick around even after deleting the mod *.pak file(s). The only theoretical fix I know of is to load a save prior to adding the mod. It's strange though, because in my (and other tester) setup, if I remove the mod, the changes go away as well. It defaults to the game's configuration, which is expected behavior. It's quite possible that there is some emission that was scheduled to kick off when the mod was active, I suppose, and that emission will be altered.
I don't know how to test for, or correct the issue you're seeing, as I my testing pool never ran into that. Granted, we were setup for testing with multiple saves and such, plus a clean base with only the ECH mod active/disabled.
The save file must get a flag after inspecting the bolt. I manged to de-spawn it out of the game by putting it on a corpse and letting that despawn over time, bolt and corpse are gone but it still crashes on any emission.
So looks like the only options are: hope they fix it with the next patch or someone figures out how to remove the flag from the save.
I would like to add that I tried your mod and it did not fix it for me. I made my mod from unpacking the base game pak files and changing the config. None of your work was used or copied. IDK what you even changed in the configs. So please do not call people thieves just for fixing something that massive amount of people were having.

"If you have Down Below bug or emissions crash 100% it is a known bug. This bug will be fixed in the next patch, it wasn't ready for the 1st one. It is caused by the bolt artifact (can be found in Tornado archanomaly). The only workaround atm is not to inspect the Bolt artifact after it has been found. If this has already happened, any emission will result in this crash."
So dont inspect weird bolt. It will cause crashes.
Wow. I highly doubt I would have stumbled across inspecting the artifact being the cause any time soon. We were narrowing it down with artifacts in general being the cause, but just having inspected it is pretty obscure... Glad GSC was able to parse all the reports and get it fixed. I don't think I could even fix that with ECH, since inspection routines go beyond what we can mod right now, without getting really dirty.
That other mod that came out "fixes" it by deleting the artifact, but not sure if it is a complete fix, as GSC has stated that you'd need to go to an earlier save before you had inspected the bolt. I think we could just... drop the bolt from our inventory without inspected it, never pick it up in the first place, etc.
I reloaded my save prior to picking up the Weird Bolt, which was dozens of hours prior - ouch - and have removed this mod to test naturally spawning emissions and I am no longer crashing. I am going to work my way towards the Swamps & SIRCAA building to see if those scripted emissions no longer cause my game to crash without the Bolt. Will edit this post with my findings.
EDIT: Went back to my old save with the Bolt to see if the new update fixed it. It did not lol. Going to progress with my new save without the Bolt to see if avoiding the Bolt fixes it. I was able to survive the scripted emission at the Swamps last night, just need to get to SIRCAA and try the scripted one in the elevator. Will update soon.
EDIT 2: Elevator ride successful. I can confirm that all of my issues have been resolved simply by reloading a save prior to acquiring the Weird Bolt and then never picking it up. It's hard to say if this is solely the reason why this crash is happening, there could be other issues like memory leaks, etc. But I can confirm that the Bolt does have some merit with these crashes.
I would imagine they know. There are multiple people talking about it in their official Discord server. It's only really been confirmed the last couple days, though, so if the devs weren't aware of it before then, then it would be unlikely stable changes would have been able to be on the update today. Here's to hoping for the next update lol
Mine started after Malachite "Defense Mission" for SPARK, on my way back to Rostok emission would always crash the game. Oddly, I did get the Weird Bolt artifact before doing that mission.. would be crazy if it ends up being because of that stupid little artifact.
I had a friend that had picked up the Weird Bolt and the immediate next emission, he crashed. Tried multiple different fixes. Finally reloaded to before picking up the bolt, skipped it, and did not crash during the next emission.
I think you might be onto something, I am also crashing after the first emission with the weird bolt. I wonder if I drop or sell it, it would sort the problem. Edit: I tried both dropping the bolt and selling it just before the emission and I still crashed. I then loaded back to before I ever picked up the weird bolt or even entered that region and am no longer crashing.
Ya know, I hadn't gotten to the point of finding any connections to items, but since a few people seem to have had the same experience, I'll be looking into that. Scuttlebutt is that the weird bolt recharges during an emission, so I wonder whether the the recharge script has something to do with it?
