SMAPI allows you to pause the music track currently playing, but it doesn't allow you to pause the execution of sound effects afaik, so the mod just mutes the other sounds; it then restores previous volume settings and unpauses the music track.
As of 1.1.0, by default, the mod only works when the game is set to pause in background so you don't forget that the game is still running. However, you can change that in the config.json file in the mod's folder by changing 'true' to 'false' so that the sounds stop whether the game is paused or not.
Tested on Linux only. Please comment if you find issues where the mod doesn't work or conflicts with other mods.
