It's obvious to see that the vanilla Feast of the Winter Star is simply Christmas by another name. This mod changes many elements so that Winter Star is a more unique and lore-friendly festival themed around the Winter Star and the mysterious stardrop! It is a festival of food, friends, and family, of sharing and summer memories, of warm wishes and wellbeing in winter.

Inspired by winter solstice celebrations from many different countries, the features of this mod are:

  • New Customs: Instead of giving presents, the Feast now lives up to its name and townspeople will gift you food instead. People write wishes for the coming new year onto paper stars and tie them to the Winter Star wishing tree. Some townspeople will also remember an older custom of sharing spice berries to remember the warmth of summer.
  • New Gift Tastes: In winter, spice berries evoke the sweet warmth of a summer day and are a universal love. On the day of the festival, as befitting the Feast, cooked food items and fruits are a universal love and other items are universally disliked. People won't appreciate it if you don't follow Pelican Town customs!
  • New Art: Christmas trees, presents, and candy canes have been replaced by wishing trees, starflower plants, and candles. Houses in Pelican Town will also have unique and appropriate door decorations!
  • New Dialogue: Characters will reference the new customs of Winter Star. See the compatibility section for information about compatibility with dialogue mods.
  • New Letters: Five new letters will be sent to the player in the week before Winter Star, one each year, that reference the old Pelican Town custom regarding spice berries. See if you can figure out who each writer is!

Installation:

To install this mod, simply download and unzip the "Solstice Winter Star" file, then move the "[CP] Solstice Winter Star" folder into your Mods folder.

Configuration:

This is an explanation of Solstice Winter Star's configuration options. To easily configure these in-game, it is recommended that you install and use Generic Mod Config Menu by spacechase0.

  • Furniture Changes: This option changes the Festive Dining Table, Tree of the Winter Star, L. Light String, Winter Tree Decal, Winter Banner, and Large Red Rug furniture items so that their colour and theme matches SWS. Set to 'false' if you would like to keep the original colours.
  • Vegetarian Food Only: Set this option to 'false' if you would like NPCs to potentially gift non-vegetarian food items. This is set to 'false' by default.
  • New Letters Fast: If you prefer not to play for five in-game years but would still like to see all of the letters, change this setting so that multiple letters will arrive in a year. 'One Year' will make all of the letters come in a single year, while 'Two Years' will spread the letters across the first two years. 'Five Years' is the default setting with one letter each year.
  • Saturation Level: This option changes the colour palette of the furniture and other art edits to be darker and more desaturated, suitable for matching with Way Back Pelican Town or various desaturated recolour mods. See the screenshots for examples.

Compatibility:

As SWS removes the possibility for vanilla townspeople to gift a tea set, it's recommended to use the companion mod Buy Tea Set at Winter Star so that it doesn't become unobtainable. This mod adds the tea set to Pierre's Winter Star stall so that you can simply buy it instead.

SWS has added compatibility with the following mods:

Dialogue Mods

Custom NPCs (Full Compatibility - Dialogue and Gift Changes)

Custom NPCs (Partial Compatibility - Dialogue Only)

Gameplay Mods

Note: Holiday Special Orders is particularly recommended to run alongside Solstice Winter Star, as it includes unique custom gift responses for spice berries and a new spice berry-related special order that connects with SWS's lore.

Other Compatible Mods
SWS will automatically disable its minor town edits if any of these mods are installed.

Incompatible Mods

  • Stardew Valley Expanded: SWS may or may not be incompatible with SVE. I have not tested SWS with SVE, and I will not offer compatibility with SVE. Use them together at your own risk. Bug reports or comments involving SVE compatibility will be deleted.
  • Emyn's Alternate Festivals: This mod is incompatible with SWS because they both change Winter Star. If you wish to use Emyn's other festivals with SWS, you will need to turn off Emyn's Winter Star edits in its config options.
  • Xiddav's Festivals Recolor and Animations: This mod is incompatible with SWS because they both change Winter Star. If you wish to use Xiddav's other festivals with SWS, you will need to turn off Xiddav's Winter Star edits in its config options.

Other custom NPCs and dialogue mods will not break if used alongside SWS, but will give regular gifts instead of food and may reference gift-giving. For mod authors who would like to add compatibility (or users who would like to add compatibility for personal use), please refer to the Adding Compatibility article.

Other Recommended Mods and Mods in Screenshots:

The portrait mod used in these screenshots is Diverse Stardew Valley by the DSV team, which includes both diversity options for all characters and a variety of seasonal and festival outfits. Outfits are available for the vanilla character designs or the alternate diversity designs.

The recolour and housing mod used in the desaturated example screenshot is Way Back Pelican Town by Gweniaczek and Vibrant Pastoral Recolor by Grapeponta.

Recommended mods to use alongside SWS are Pelican Town Potluck by LenneDalben, which is a sibling mod that makes similar edits to the Luau, and the mods included in the DSV-Complementary recommendations list.
