Growing Valley - Child NPCs is a work in progress mod for Stardew Valley that lets the player's kids grow up, with one unique child for each marriage candidate. Currently, children for Alex, Leah, Penny, Sebastian, Elliott, and Emily have been implemented. Aside from these six unique children, this mod also includes an older and younger NPC child of the farmer with their own schedules and dialogue.

Each child has alternative winter outfits so they can stay warm in the cold, and they'll bundle up in them once winter starts.

This mod download also includes a recommended companion mod, Growing Valley - Growth Spurt, which gives Jas and Vincent (and Leo, if he's in the valley) updated appearances meant to look slightly older and more distinct from the unique children added by this mod. You can delete the component if you don't want it (it's the "[CP] GVGrowthSpurt" folder included in the mod).

You can configure what your children call you and your spouse/roommate in the config.json file (not recommended) or using Generic Mod Config Menu (highly recommended). You can also change your generic children's hairstyles, clothing, hair colours, and eye colours.

You can also configure which child you have; select whichever unique or customizable child you want in the Advanced Config, and choose one of three dialogue presets to better fit your situation!
  • "Canonical" is the default when married/living with a roommate, and your child may make references to the personality or family of the specific character whom they are intended to be the child of.
  • "Generic" removes references to that assumed parent's personality, allowing you to seamlessly use unique children with any spouse.
  • "Single" removes all references to another parent, and is the default used when living without a spouse or roommate.

For the full selection of customization options for your generic children, download the optional files "Customization Suite" and "Vanilla Suite". "Vanilla Suite" will also allow your children to default to having your spouse or roommate's hair colour if your spouse/roommate is a vanilla NPC.

In addition to being a LittleNPCs content pack, this mod has additional templates for making mods featuring custom children in the same format. These can be downloaded from the Miscellaneous Files.

Leah's son:

An observant boy who loves colours and trees. You might find him wandering into places he shouldn't be...

Alex's daughter:

A practical girl with an affinity for running edging on obsession. She's careful about what she eats.

Penny's daughter

An adventurous girl with a deep interest in ancient history. She likes to follow her mother Penny to work.

Sebastian's daughter

A quiet girl who likes woodworking. She can usually be found hanging around her extended family.

Elliott's son

An enthusiastic boy who loves sea life, particularly crabs. Has a sensitive sense of smell.
Alternate portraits for him can be toggled in the Advanced Config.

Emily's daughter

A bubbly girl with... unconventional tastes. Cannot be trusted near a trash can.
Alternate portraits for her can be toggled in the advanced config.

Your children:

Spirited kids who are curious about the world. They usually hang out near the playground.
Their hairstyles, hair colours, eye colours, clothing, and clothing colour can be customized in the config, while their skin tones can be switched between two presets (which one is used by default depends on the skin tone of your spouse/roommate). Here's a handy hairstyle guide:

Shorter and Longer versions of Fluffy, Coily, Spiky, Curly, and Straight

NOTES:
  • If you get an error after customizing your child, please restart the game.
  • Custom files can be added to the "Custom_Portraits_Sprites" folder found in the "GVChildNPCs" folder to override the provided assets for portraits and sprites (so fully custom portraits and sprites can be used instead). Templates are included to assist in naming the files correctly and correctly ordering portrait expressions.

Current features:
  • Unique NPC children for Leah, Alex, Penny, Sebastian, Elliott, and Emily, with schedules, gift tastes, dialogue, and all that jazz
  • Generic NPC children who replace any toddlers who don't meet the requirements to be a unique child ("replace" is a bit harsh... they grew up, okay?)
  • Winter outfits for all 6 of the currently-implemented unique children
  • Templates and guides for creating a unique child of your own, much like creating any other custom NPC
  • Customizable parental titles/roommate titles, configurable spouse/roommate pronouns, and Gender Neutrality Mod compatibility
  • Config options for selecting specific unique children (so they can be accessed without marrying their associated parent), as well as options to change their dialogue to reflect that
  • 10 different hairstyles for generic children, each with a whole swath of colours to choose from
  • Eye colour config options for generic children
  • Clothing config options for generic children, with 4 outfits that come in 5 colours
  • If you download the optional file "Vanilla Suite", your generic children will default to having your spouse/roommate's hair colour if your spouse/roommate is a vanilla NPC.

Planned features (bold are in development):
  • Increased customizability for farmer children, with more clothing and more hairstyles
  • Unique children for all of the vanilla marriage candidates (the designs are coming along!)
  • (LittleNPCs dependency allowing) Multiplayer and poly support (I might develop a work around to maximize compatibility)
  • Edited dialogue and schedules for other characters referencing and interacting with the children
  • Seasonal outfits (winter outfits for current children done. No plans for summer/fall outfits exist as of now.)

With the Growth Spurt component included, Jas, Vincent, and Leo get a little bigger :D

----------------------------------
Mod compatibility information:

The Farmer's Children:
  • Growing Valley uses LittleNPCs, the same base framework that The Farmer's Children uses. As a result, the two mods are not compatible.
  • Growing Valley already adds schedules and gift tastes for the children included.
  • If you just want to see Jas, Vincent, and Leo grow up, delete the "[CP] GVChildNPCs" folder from the "GrowingValley-Children" mod folder. After doing this, you will NOT get Growing Valley's children unless you redownload it. This means any other LittleNPCs mod can be used, including The Farmer's Children.
  • Alternatively, you can download GrowthSpurt separately from the Main Files.

Unique Children and Unique Children Talk:
  • If you want to use Growing Valley with Unique Children, Unique Children Talk, or any of its expansion mods, your unique child in that mod will grow up into one of the children from Growing Valley.
  • Unless they fulfill the requirements (gender, player spouse) to be a unique child in Growing Valley, they will be one of the generic default children.
  • If you want to use both mods, you can extend the age before your child grows up from a toddler to an NPC by changing AgeWhenKidsAreModified in the LittleNPCs config to be a higher number. This is particularly useful if you want to use Immersive Unique Children Talk and the associated Immersive Family, which add a large amount of dialogue and events.
  • You may need to remove the Unique Children Talk mod once your toddler becomes an NPC child. Otherwise, they may not use their new schedule.
  • Though not yet tested, removing Growing Valley and LittleNPCs while using Unique Children Talk is not recommended. If you do remove Growing Valley and LittleNPCs, I'd like to know how it goes so I can gather data and information about their compatibility (and, hopefully, update or remove this warning!). You can try increasing the AgeWhenKidsAreModified setting in the LittleNPCs config (so that your children revert to toddlers) before removing any mods to see if it helps.
  • When using Unique Children, avoid changing your child's name through the social menu. This can cause issues with LittleNPCs.

----------------------------------
Other details:
  • If your children like to wander through walls or ever get lost in the bus stop area, try changing "DoChildrenWander" to false in the LittleNPCs config/unchecking the option in the LittleNPCs settings. Unfortunately, this will also stop them from wandering around the house, and they will instead lay in bed in the morning.
  • The age when your children grow up into child NPCs can be changed in the LittleNPC config/settings under "AgeWhenKidsAreModified". Default is 83 days, which is almost a month after your child becomes a toddler.
  • Children have curfew at 7pm by default in the LittleNPCs settings. Most of their schedules roughly follow this curfew as well, so increasing it won't make much of a difference. Changing it to be earlier should have the desired effect.
  • If you get an error after customizing your child, please restart the game.
  • For any error, really, try restarting your game. If that doesn't fix it, please let me know! Get a link to your error log using this website and send it to me so I'll be able to troubleshoot it.

(6/11/2024) Note for those playing on languages other than English (including custom languages!):
EDIT (10/19/2024)
LittleNPCs has been updated since I first put out this notice! Make sure you're using the most up-to-date version to avoid bugs.

----------------------------------
Please let me know if you encounter any bugs or issues, especially regarding compatibility! I expect there to be minor scheduling issues with mods that change vanilla Stardew locations (such as SVE), but this should work fine with anything that doesn't touch them much.

Please contact me if you want to translate this mod. Not only would I, obviously, want to link the translation, I'm concerned about the feasibility of translating the mod (even though it has i18n files) as it has some lines that check the spouse's gender. Depending on how gendered language works in the target language, this could be a huge headache to do alone! I'd be happy to modify the mod files to add additional line variants, or even additional tokens, to accommodate for the translation.
If you've already translated the mod without any issues, you're free to post it as long as the translation links back to this page (as a file requirement or otherwise) and/or I'm otherwise credited! Please let me know if you've translated this mod as well, and I'd be happy to add it to the translation list!

I'd love to see your customized kids! Feel free to upload pictures of them in the IMAGES tab. (After all, I made all those hair recolours... I wanna see people using them!!)
