Changelogs
This mod reworks chickens and other coop animals' diet to be more flavorful, balanced and distinct from barn animals, while also making them more closely resemble their Harvest Moon counterparts.

Mechanic Changes:
  • Chickens, ducks and dinosaurs when let outside do not need to eat grass - they can forage worms and seeds straight from the dirt! They do get a friendship bonus when foraging inside grass though (they won't consume the grass), so planting grass around coops (especially blue grass) are still very useful.
  • When they're inside however, they need to eat their own poultry feed instead of hay. Chicken feed can be acquired in a variety of ways:
  • Bought from Marnie for 30 gold each
  • Putting corn or mixed seeds into the mill or the handmill. Each corn yields 4 to 6 feed, and each mixed seed yields 2 to 3.
  • Alternately, if you don't have a mill yet, you can hand mix 1 mixed seeds into 1 poultry feed.
  • Scything grass gives 1 feed for every 8 hay.
  • Hoeing an artifact slot may yield a bunch of poultry feed.

  • Silos can store both hay and poultry feed, 120 of each per silo by default (compared to 240 hay in vanilla game). Silo capacity is configurable. Hoppers and auto feeders inside farm buildings will pull the appropriate feed item.
  • Rabbits still need to consume grass when they're outside (this is configurable). They will happily dine on poultry feed when they're inside though.

These changes buffs coop animals to make them more distinct and competitive with barn animals by giving them a niche of low maintenance animals - they require zero upkeep when let outside, and their indoor feed is much cheaper to purchase. At the same time though there's a puzzle element in the ability to make your own chicken feed, so you need to do a couple more steps to truly eliminate their upkeep, albeit with great returns - six corn plants produce nearly enough feed to feed an entire Deluxe Coop through the winter!

Other Goodies:
  • One new item: Marnie's Old Hand Mill. It's not much, but it allows you to mill stuff before you get an actual mill built. Marnie will send you one once you've been keeping chickens for a while.
  • One new special order from Marnie available during fall or winter, completion of which unlocks...
  • Two new premium recipes for making hay and poultry feed, if you think scything grass or milling corn isn't efficient enough. And...
  • A new recipe to craft for yourself a certain, extremely rare animal-related item, purchasable in Qi's Walnut Room.

Full Progression Details (spoiler warning):
Spoiler:
Show

  • Once you build your first coop or barn, Marnie will send you letters with hints on how to care for your poultry and livestock respectively. These letters are purely informational and help with learning this mod's features.
  • After collecting 10 chicken eggs, Marnie will send you her old hand mill. You can use this hand mill to mill corn into feed (or wheat, beets and rice) as an early alternative to the full Mill building.
  • A new special order "Marnie Needs Fiber" can become available during fall and winter. This order requires collecting 150 fiber in 2 weeks and depositing them in Marnie's fridge.
  • After completing the special order, Marnie will send a letter containing recipes for making premium hay fodder and poultry feed mix.
    • Premium Poultry Feed Mix: 10 Corn, 10 Wheat, 5 Carrots and 2 Bug Meat. Mill this mixture to make 200 Poultry Feed.
    • Premium Livestock Fodder Mix: 30 Fiber, 10 Amaranth, 5 Green Beans and 2 Cave Carrots. Dehydrate this mixture to make 200 Hay.
    • Additionally, if Qi's Walnut Room is unlocked, Mr. Qi will send a letter informing the player that his recipe for Golden Animal Crackers are available the following morning. Requires 5 of each mix type and 5 Mystic Syrup.

Note that if you install the mod mid-save onto a developed farm, the mails may be sent all at once. This is fine.

Install Instructions (Important):
  • Install Content Patcher, and the latest version of Extra Animal Configs.
  • Then install this mod as usual.
  • Warning: NOT compatible with Animals Die's hunger portion. Disable that portion of the mod for now.
  • For other mod compatibility, See the sections below, particularly if you use any coop upgrade mods.
  • This mod is safe to install mid-save! Any existing hay on your coop's feeding troughs will be gradually consumed by your coop animals as necessary; afterwards, you can start placing poultry feed on the trough. If you don't want to wait, use bombs to destroy the existing hay.
  • Optional: Also install Generic Mod Config Menu to change some settings to fine tune your experience. Currently has settings for also making rabbits dirt foragers and settings to make silos store 240 of each feed type if you feel 120 is too restrictive.

Uninstall instructions:
  • This mod should be safe to uninstall mid-save, however after uninstalling you must go into your coops and manually trash the error items on the trough yourself.
  • You should be able to just pick the error items up by hand, but if for some reason you can't, use bombs to dislodge them (after evacuating all nearby objects you don't want bombed to smithereens!).

Animal Compatibility:
As of version 4.0.0, this mod is compatible with every modded coop animal mods! They are made into foragers that don't eat grass when outside, and requires poultry feed when inside.

Building Compatibility:
  • Coop cosmetics and interior changes mods should work fine, as long as the interior is for the base (Deluxe) Coop and not any modded upgrades to the Deluxe Coop building.
  • (Basically - if the mod makes the Deluxe Coop bigger or prettier? Automatically compatible! If it adds an upgrade to the Deluxe Coop that you have to build at Robin's? Not automatically compatible, unless listed below)
  • Dwarven Expansion's Cave. All its inhabitants (crabs and grubs) are also turned into foragers that eat poultry feed.
  • Resource Chickens's Big Coop
  • Jen's Mega Coop and Barn's Mega Coop
  • Aviary
  • Stardew Valley Expanded's Premium Coop
  • Other mods that upgrades the vanilla game's deluxe coops are not compatible, but not game-breaking (they'd fill their trough with hay, which coop animals would still eat). Let me know if there's any you want compat added for.

Recolor Compatibility
You can change the Poultry Feed item's colors to match the following mod's Hay recolors:

Other Mods Compatibility:

  • Automate: Poultry feed can't be automatically loaded into silos with Automate yet. Chest in front of hay hopper probably works, but this haven't been tested thoroughly for potential issues.
  • Cornucopia - More Crops: The premium hay and poultry feed recipe can be modified to include ingredients from Cornucopia, yielding double the amount. Requires the full extended crop pack. This is configurable in the mod's config options, and disabled by default.
  • Cornucopia - Artisan Machines: Corn put into the mill will make both Corn Flour and Poultry Feed.
  • Animal Husbandry: No special interactions for now, the two mods work fine together. Highly recommended for a more immersive animal-based play through.
  • Visit Mount Vapius: Moira will also sell poultry feed during market days.
  • Animals Die: Not compatible with that mod's hunger portion. Disable it for now.
