Inspired by Eurasian Birds for Ornithologists' Guild, I decided to add British butterflies to Custom Critters.

Do. You. Know. HOWFREAKINGMANYKINDSOFBUTTERFLIESTHEUKHAS?

The answer is a lot. Several species also have dimorphism between males and females, between spring and summer emergences, or just between locations/subspecies. So that species list is actually multiplied. It's very, very difficult to get a good distinction in a 16x16 sprite, but I did (except for the Glanville and heath fritillaries; those guys are identical so they share a sprite). I only did butterflies which are residents or migrants; I did not do species listed as questionable or adventive. In summer, there's also a small chance to see butterflies which are locally extinct in the British Isles but which are still common on the European mainland.

I'm just glad I didn't decide to do the butterflies of Texas. Yeesh.

Butterflies are divided by seasons, and by commonality/rarity. Each season (except winter) is comprised of a common folder, which spawns often all across the map, and a rare folder, which spawns rarely in more remote locations (think mountains, forest...basically not town). The rare spawn list also contains a couple of common "spoilers" which will boost the numbers of the most common species and keep rare species rare (butterflies on the rare list move a bit faster, so if you see two of the same moving at different speeds, you know you didn't get a rare spawn once). Species distribution varies seasonally; a butterfly which is common in spring may be rare in summer, or vice versa, and absent the rest of the year. A few select species will spawn in town in winter (I know Pelican Town isn't really big enough for the urban heat island to really be in effect, but I needed a way to control where they spawn; imagine Gus turned on the boiler at the saloon and woke one up from hibernation or something). Butterflies in winter will be slo~o~ow because it's cold! They also only spawn around midday because they really, really need that sun to be able to fly; mornings and evenings are just too cold even if the sun is still up. Summer butterflies will be a bit faster and more lively because of the heat, and will also continue to spawn later in the day in case you use a mod that delays summer sunsets.

There is also built-in support for locations added by Stardew Valley ExpandedEast Scarp, and Ridgeside Village, and butterflies will follow the same logic as elsewhere (rare butterflies only outside town, a few winter butterflies only in town). If you don't use all or any of those mods, don't worry; it won't harm your game. Just know that if you do use them, you'll see some British butterflies around there as well. I kept spawn numbers reasonably low, both to avoid overwhelming smaller areas and as a nod to the fact that the UK has lost many of its butterflies so while all species are represented, you may not see all of them every day in every place.

Installation is simple: just unzip into Mods/Custom Critters/Critters and enjoy alongside your other [CC] packs.

Version 1.1 fixes an error in which "winter" butterflies were in fact spawning in spring (leaving winter with none instead of few), slows the wing flapping animation in winter (previously, the travel speed was slower than other seasons but the wings beat at the same rate), and adds support for locations from Forager's Nooks and Cranies and Mount Vapius.
