A desert mini-expansion!

2.0 Update:
- a couple big fixes
- tortoises grow up a little faster
- added a final part to the expansion (talk to the cave flamingo again)
- added another animal : turtles!

A note on the turtles:
These guys swim, and are effected by all of the same mechanics that effect Ducks - if Alternative Textures is installed, they will walk on water, and if Ducks to Water is installed, they will go swimming after you pet them.

This mod adds:

- a new desert-themed map and warp portals
- a few events with Sandy
- a new crop
- a new vendor
- two new animals for the barn
- new artisan goods
- new cooking recipes

- meant for late-game, and some parts of it require items from Ginger Island (like the Ostrich Incubator)
- If installed on a new save, made to unfold naturally once you reach it later!

How to get this mini-expansion started:

- The bus to the desert must be unlocked
- four-hearts or more with Sandy
- 9:00 PM at night or later

Be warned! The first part of this quest happens at night with a tight crunch time- give yourself 2 hours in-game to get through it! If you start the quest right at 9, you'll be home before midnight. The latest you should try to start it is 11:30 PM!

Requirements:

To function, this mod REQUIRES:

Content Patcher
Farm Type Manager

Not required but HIGHLY recommended:

Dynamic Reflections

Not required but softly recommended:

Gentle Night Lighting

A note on the Desert Festival:
This mod's quests cannot be triggered during the three days of the Desert Festival, and the related warps will disappear until the festival is over.

This mod should not actively conflict with anything, and has been playtested with:
Walk to the Desert Redux

I recommend you go into the quest blind, but below is a guide on how it works

MAJOR SPOILERS

Part 1:

Start:

Enter the Oasis/Sandy's shop anytime after 9PM, once you have 4-hearts or more with her.

Spoiler:
Show
If you choose to go home, the day will end. That's it, quest over!
If you want the reward items, you have to cheat through something like CJB.

If you choose to help, a scroll will appear next to the bus stop. Touch the scroll to go to the canyons.

P.S. If you don't touch the scroll, it will stay there until you're ready. Just know that the following events will make less sense if you decide to do it during the daytime.

This is the only time you will be able to freely collect rainpuffs, you will not be able to purchase them later. Spend as much time as you can collecting them, but keep the clock in mind! The lit spiral portals will take you to different parts of the map, and ultimately to a secret area.

If you truly cannot find where to go:
Spoiler:
Show
The portal in the bottom left corner will take you to the summit - exit south, then swim into the water where it's lit up. This will warp you to the final area.

This will bring you back to Sandy's, where you'll be rewarded with a recipe and a warp totem home.

Spoiler:
Show
Put the rainpuffs in a seedmaker to make creosote seeds, which can be grown to get more rainpuffs.

Part 2:

Start:
Make the item from the recipe that you learned, and bring it to Sandy's shop.

Spoiler:
Show
This will start a cutscene, after which a statue will appear next to the bus stop outside. This statue takes you back to the canyons, which have been slightly transformed. It is a permanent fixture and you can now visit the map whenever you want.

Instead of rainpuffs, the canyon now has some people scattered around it. Follow the spiral portals you learned before to talk to everyone. Most everyone has a riddle to solve, with a numerical answer. One person will advise you to add the numbers together to get the final answer.

There is a flamingo that sells more recipes in exchange for rainpuffs. There is also a flamingo standing in front of a cave. When you talk to it, it will ask you for the final answer for all the riddles.

Inside the cave is the a prize

Spoiler:
Show
a tortoise egg.

Part 3:

Start:

Go back to the canyons and talk to the flamingo in front of the save for a second time.
Spoiler:
Show

The flamingo will let you into the cave, which has filled with sand. There is a man there who will teleport you back to the summit, this time during the day.

Talk to the flamingo on the far right ledge for a riddle.

Answer the riddle for your final prize:
Spoiler:
Show

a clutch of turtle eggs.

Recipes

Spoiler:
Show
These teas are brewed using foraged items, plus rainpuffs. For example, Ginger Tea is made with sugar, ginger, and rainpuffs.

The teas don't sell for a huge amount of money, so their value is mostly in their buffs.

Each tea increases player speed, and adds one additional buff. They last the entire day. That's right! These buffs do not expire unless replaced with another beverage, or until you go to sleep for the day. They stack with buffs from eaten dishes.

Buffs

Spoiler:
Show

Remedy Tea: 1.2 speed, +10 Immunity to status effects

Taro Tea: 1.2 speed, +50pts to Stamina

Ginger Tea: 1.2 speed, x2 Crit Multiplier

Cactus Tea: 1.2 speed, +5 to Luck Level

Fiddlehead Tea: 1.2 speed, +5 to Attack

Animals

Spoiler:
Show

The Tortoise lives in the barn, and is hatched through the Ostrich Incubator. The hatchling takes 10 days to grow up. Once fully grown, your Tortoise drops an item every day - either an egg, or a flake from its shell called a "Scute Flake."

Collect 5 eggs, and put them in the Preserves Jar to create "Pickled Eggs." This is an artisan good that sells for 950g each.

Collect Scute Flakes, and craft them with 5 bone fragments to create a "Tortoiseshell Hairpin." This is an artisan good that sells for 900g each.

Comes in three random colors!

The Island Turtle lives in the in the coop and is hatched through the coop incubator. They grow up in only 2 days, and drop turtle eggs every 4 days after that. One clutch of turtle eggs can be pickled in the Preserve Jar to create "Pickled Eggs." This is the same artisan good made from Tortoise eggs, and sells for 950g each.

Turtles swim!

Come in two colors - a domestic and island variety.

This mod is fully functioning the way I want it, but "under the hood" it's a bit of a mess. In the future, I will:

- create better folder and json structure so that the content.json doesn't contain literally the entire Data coding
- add in Gifting (currently, there's nothing coded for gifting the new items to villagers, so every item gets a neutral reaction)
- add in aging for Pickled eggs (I attempted to do this but feel stumped by cask rules haha)
- continue to work on the pixel art for Tortoises, and maybe add in variations
- create a nyapu variant for the shopkeeper's portrait

-------

Some A/N:

I grew up in the American southwest desert, and originally made this mod because I was feeling homesick. The crop that comes with this expansion is so special to me that I have a tattoo of it!
Originally it started just as a new map, and grew from there (which is why the coding is all tangled together, I certainly didn't expect to add so many features)

a PSA on the hairpin item:
Spoiler:
Show
The use of real tortoiseshell is highly illegal for good reason. Several turtle and tortoise species are endangered because of the tortoiseshell trade. Almost all tortoiseshell-patterned items in real life, such as glasses and combs, are made synthetically. However, it is also true that tortoises and turtles slowly shed their shell in little flakes (as opposed to other reptiles, such as snakes, that shed their skin all at once). The "scute flake" item is meant to be a stardew-friendly nod to that shedding. I do not in any way condone the use of real live tortoiseshell for the making of hairpins!

Thank you for giving this mini-expansion a try!

Huge huge thanks to the SDV Discord, which helped me with coding every step of the way!
