How to use
After you've loaded the singleplayer save file you want the mod to change, go to the SMAPI console and use the command "set_max_children <value>". This will change the maximum number of children you can have to the value you entered. There's also a command "get_max_children" to check what the value is currently set to.
Your preference information is saved to a file in the data folder. This file has the same name as your save file, so it will look like
"FarmerName_123456789". If you want, you could edit this file to set your value. Just make sure you load the save file first to create the data!
For an example, if you wanted to have four children, you would load your save file and type "set_max_children 4" into the console. Your spouse will then be able to prompt you about having children until you reach four total. Or if you didn't want children at all, you would load your save file and type "set_max_children 0" into the console. Your spouse will never prompt you about having children.
The recommended limit is four. While you can go above that, at that point you will run out of places for children to sleep, and you may run
into issues using Content Patcher mods which change children.
Also, this mod allows you to choose your child's gender when you name them. You could have one son, or three daughters, or two sons and two daughters, or no children at all, etc, the choice is yours.
Config Options
Family Planning has a config option, "AdoptChildrenWithRoommate". The default value is false.
If you set the value to true, you will be able to adopt children with a roommate! In vanilla Stardew Valley, Krobus is the only roommate character available, but if a mod adds more roommate characters, this will work for them as well. Your roommate will function the same as a spouse and prompt you to adopt a child when you have less than the maximum number of children.
Note: If you're using a mod like "Krobus Marriage Mod" that makes Krobus marriable, this mod is compatible! Because Krobus is a normal marriage candidate when using the mod, you don't need to change this config setting. You'll be able to have kids with Krobus just like any other marriage candidate.
Mod Customization (Appearance and Dialogue)
Using this mod, children of the same gender are identical. If you'd like to customize the appearance of your children, there are two ways, creating a Content Pack, or using a Content Patcher mod which is compatable.
(Right now, there aren't any Content Patcher mods that have compatable versions. When a Content Patcher mod releases a Family Planning version, I will add the link here.)
Your spouse has basic dialogue when a child is born. This dialogue is only available in English. As a result, I've added the ability to customize your spouse's dialogue when a child is born. This is also added through using a Content Pack.
An example Content Pack is available for download in the Files tab, and the step-by-step instructions for making a Content Pack are on my GitHub.
Multiplayer
I haven't been able to test this mod with multiplayer for the 1.4 update yet, so proceed with caution.
Compatibility
- Works with Stardew Valley 1.4 beta on Linux/Mac/Windows.
- This mod uses Harmony, so there may be interference with other mods using Harmony to patch the same methods. If you notice any issues, please let me know.
How to Uninstall
To uninstall Family Planning, remove the Family Planning mod folder. If you have any content packs for Family Planning, be sure to remove them as well. The children present at the time the mod is removed will not be removed. Children can still be removed the vanilla way (spoilers).
