[BUG REPORT] – Menu Loop Caused by GMCM + Dynamic Reflections
After the May 2025 update, players have reported getting stuck in an infinite loop when exiting mod configuration menus: most commonly after opening Dynamic Reflections via a keybind (e.g. R). The root cause appears to be a conflict introduced by the latest version of GMCM (Generic Mod Config Menu), which prevents certain mod menus from closing properly. The game continues running in the background, but the menu interface stays locked. No errors appear in SMAPI logs. This issue has also been reported with mods like Happy Home Designer, suggesting a broader compatibility issue with GMCM.
Temporary Fixes: A reliable workaround is to install a UI-overriding mod like "What do you want? Or Stardew Progress and bind it to a key (e.g. F3). Opening it forces other menus to close, including Dynamic Reflections and GMCM. Afterward, simply close Stardew Progress to resume gameplay.

if you have SMAPI debug mode enabled, you can enter debug sleep in the console to advance to the next day and clear the stuck menus. Downgrading GMCM to a previous version may also help until a compatibility patch is released.
Thank you for posting this!! Panicked and restarted the game instead of looking this up first... Lost the whole first day of summer year one after already restarting it once ;-; It happened after I opened the Dynamic Reflections menu on accident -- I didn't even know it had a keybind.
Error message that says "KeyboardButton.xnb" doesn't exist in the files and menu won't open with keybind or on-screen button. Tried deleting+redownloading GMCM, hasn't fixed it yet. Anyone having the same issue?
No sé por qué, pero cada vez que guardo alguna configuración de mod y luego cierro el juego, no se guarda y repite el mismo proceso de reconfiguración.
Does anyone know what might be causing and/or how to fix this problem O’m having where whenever I save settings to any mod in the GMCM sometimes when I click save on any given mod that’ve changed setting for it seemingly randomly causes the game to immediately freeze/not respond and after a moment there will be a pop-up saying “Windows 10 is not responding; end process or wait for response”.Neither ever respond and always have to be closed.
I say seemingly randomly because it doesn’t seem mod specific, it happens on big or small mods, mods that I saved successfully in the menu in the same session early or saved last play session (this problem has been happening for a few days)
I don’t get any errors or debug info from SMAPI so I have no idea what the problem is.
Microsoft Translator: hello. After today's update, there is a possibility that the mod settings interface cannot exit to the game interface normally, and can only keep looping out of the configuration interface. Smapi didn't report an error
Found the reason, it's a mod conflict that hasn't been updated for a long time, and it has been dealt with and reopened without any problems.
Have any of you figured out how to escape the loop without restarting the game? Went through most of my day and don't really want to restart since I did a lot.
I managed to get out of the menu by using the "debug sleep" command in the SMAPI command window, which advances you to the next day. All other commands I tried (such as warping to another location, reducing health to 0, starting one of the arcade minigames) affected the game behind the menu, but wouldn't cause the menu to close.
I hope this helps anyone who gets stuck the same way.
You hover over the keybind that is there and hit another key to replace it, so I think hitting x (as another user said) would just keybind to the x key. Some games allow you to hit ESC to remove a keybind, I just used one far way from my "hit range", NumPad7.
I'm also getting an error with Dynamic Reflections and GMCM (I'm not sure which mod is actually causing this issue but I think it may be with GMCM as that was recently updated). Whenever I use my keybind to open the Dynamic Reflections settings (my keybind is R) and try to close the menu, I get stuck in a never-ending loop where I can't close the menu and resume my game.
Here is a link to a video of this issue to better visualise.
My SMAPI Log isn't coming up with any errors, but here is a link to my log anyway.
EDIT: It definitely is GMCM causing these issues as it's happening with other mods as well, like Happy Home Designer. A whole day of designing and customising was wasted because of this issue.
A temporary fix I found is using a mod that removes all other windows and only shows itself.
For example, if the Dynamic Reflection menu pops up and then you try to exit, the GMCM menu might appear on top, and you get stuck. I use F3 to open the "Stardew Progress (https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/9786)" menu.
Pressing F3 closes both the Dynamic Reflection and GMCM menus.
Then I just close the SP menu and I'm back in the game.
Edit: changed the mod from what do you want to stardew progress
Did you get it to work? I had the same thing but typed help first then tried the command again and it said [Console Commands] Sent debug command to the game, but there was no output. And it was fixed when I tabbed back
same issue here. I can't seem to work out to edit the hotkeys and thus closing it. Is there something else we can try? edit: i tried to 'debug customizemenu' like ReviatheStarf said and that worked! Thanks :D
Was happening to me too since the defalut keybind R for Dynamic Reflections is so easy to hit accidentally. I changed the keybind to a far away NumPad7 so I won't accidentally open that anymore! I just hope GMCM gets this fixed quickly. Until then, debug customizemenu worked for me.
FYI for people getting stuck in menus, "debug forge" is a far safer command to do than debug cmenu since cmenu will reset a lot of stuff in multiplayer.
