Due to multiple pets being part of vanilla 1.6 Stardew Vally, the Cats and Dogs mod will no longer be maintained.
I have added an optional file for 1.6 that helps you remove pets that you had previously added with this mod on older saves. This should help make your old saves compatible with the new vanilla pets.
I will note for others that with 1.6 playing Meadowlands currently in year 2, I haven't had any pets dissappear, I can add and remove hats from them as normal, I can still adopt or delete pets at the (main) bowl, and I can add bowls and the mod pets do claim them after a time. They do take *forever* to befriend though. I ended up turning on Auto-Pet Pets in the CJB Cheats Menu which is slowly increasing their hearts. When I was just petting them myself their hearts were not increasing. Maybe I was inconsistent and missed pets some days? Maybe the length of time I took to afford everyone's water bowls was impacting it? They did have little sad icons above them every morning until they all got water bowls, so definitely get more water bowls before you adopt lots of mod pets!
how am i supposed to add the optional file? Am I supposed to have the mod and then add the optional file? or am I supposed to only have it? I don't know why but when I bring the sa to the bowl, the op up shows up but my 8 cats are still there T_T
the patch to help remove the pets on 1.6, make my game work normaly with the new pets (i dont know why and i dont know if this could be usefull for someone)
Can I ask in what way the pets don't work correctly? I opened old and new saves with this mod and i can still adopt pets at the pet bowl and they still run around the farm and can be petted. I can even put hats on them. I can't assign them a water bowl but I don't think it does anything except take longer to befriend them? They do in fact claim water bowls for themselves it's just not immediate. I don't know if this is the same for vanilla pets.
Although the mod updated, it's still not launchable with 1.6, so pets are kinda baked into the game and since the mod won't load there's no way to remove them (that I know of.)
edit: i see there's probably a way to edit the save, but I'm afraid of breaking it somehow
Does anyone know if the multiple pets in vanilla works for multiplayer? meaning, can someone playing with me adopt a pet that is theirs like in this mod?
In the current version, the pets will sometimes clump together at the pet bowl if you don't use Pet Spawn Location.
Pet Spawn Location also helps with being able to walk through your pets if they're in the way of your bed.
With the upcoming 1.6 Stardew Valley update I may remove the requirement since some of the logic is changing. I don't know when I will be able to complete my update for 1.6 yet.
I have a really cool suggestion for compatibility, there could be an alternative file for when East Scarpe is installed so instead of bring wood and fiber to the pet bowl players could adopt other dogs and cats on Jacob vet clinic! This would be awesome and very immersive! There could be a catalogue on his vet clinic that when interacted opens the menu to select the pet :D

you can also try using the SMAPI console to use the remove_pet command
remove_pet "Pet Name"

It might depend what farm map is used, I only tested on four corners.
