About this mod
Vanilla glass too plain? Get yourself some frosty glass. Comes in 1k and 2k and covers one of the most common glass surfaces in the game. 1k version should use less vram than vanilla. Feedback appreciated for future versions/options (Eg, different opacity, roughness and normal map strength options).
- Permissions and credits
This mod aims to replace the most common glass surface texture set in the game with something a little more frosty.
- Can improve perceived detail. <-- refer to screenshots
- 2k version uses the same file sizes as vanilla
- 1k version (used in most screenshots) uses smaller file sizes than vanilla. <-- This is my recommendation.
Compatibility:
This mod isn't compatible with other glass retextures. Some glass retexture mods, like Stellar glass, cover more glass textures than mine. If you prefer, you can install Stellar glass first, then mine over it.
Pre-Installation:
- Go to your Documents\My Games\Starfield folder
- Open (Or create it if it is not there already) StarfieldCustom.ini
- Add this text to the file if it's not there already:
[Archive]
bInvalidateOlderFiles=1
sResourceDataDirsFinal=
Installation (Manual):
- Extract the Data folder within the .zip you Downloaded to your Documents\My Games\Starfield folder. Don't extract it to your game folder like prior Bethesda games.
Installation (Vortex):
- Vortex and other mod managers should work fine. If not, let me know in the comments. I don't generally use mod managers so my support may be limited here.
Performance:
Vanilla total file size: 6.66MB | 1K version total file size: 2.66MB | 2K version total file size: 6.66MB
Theoretically, my 1K version should use less vram than vanilla. Using the screenshots, you can see why I recommend the 1k version. The quality isn't that much worse than the 2k version and the size is obviously smaller.
Known Issues:
There is a bit of temporal smearing when you strafe side-to-side and you're looking straight at a glass pane. If you play with TAA off it isn't an issue at all. If you use any of the XeSS or DLSS mods, it might be less apparent.
Enjoy the mod? Don't forget to endorse and feel free to check out my other work:
- Simply Faster Ladders
- Better Shadow Coverage
- Better Ambient Occlusion (Less Blobby Distant Shadows)

Credit to other glass mods for inspiration. These textures were made from scratch using Substance Painter, Substance Sampler and Paint.NET.
Also, I didn't use these exact images for reference but here are some images to show what kind of frosted glass look I was going for:
