"Nothing is softer or more flexible than water,
yet nothing can resist it." ~Lao Tzu
From the team that brought you popular mods like WATER and Realistic Water Two for Skyrim, as well as, the WET mod for Fallout 4, we are excited to introduce Realistic Water, a super fun time liquid experience for Starfield. Since Starfield modding hasn't even had its morning tea yet, we are currently focusing on enhancing textures. Here's a summary of what we've accomplished so far:
- Improved Foam Textures - our custom foam textures have been created from scratch and are 2-4x the resolution of the vanilla textures. 4K textures are available in the optional 4K file.
- Enhanced Wave Textures - these wave textures affect almost anywhere there are wave patterns on water (NA pools, oceans, etc.). While they maintain a design similar to the vanilla textures, they feature more waves, increased height, and some directional flow. We plan to expand on this feature further with unique and distinct water textures once the necessary modding tools (CK2/xEdit/Nifskope) become available.
- High-Resolution Vanilla Textures - while we await the release of modding tools, we have upscaled the vanilla water textures. These upscaled textures are available as separate downloads in both 2x and 4x resolutions compared to the vanilla textures. The textures range from a minimum size of 1K to a maximum of 4K. Each texture has been processed individually to ensure higher quality compared to vanilla textures. Currently only the _color textures are included.
Textures
We utilize a variety of tools during our texture workflow including, but not limited to: ChaiNNer, Intel Texture Works, Nvidia Texture Tools, Photoshop, Substance 3D, Substance Player, texconv, texdiag, etc.
All of Realistic Water's textures...
- ...are saved in the vanilla format (BC4=BC4, BC5=BC5, etc.); exception to BC1 files which are saved as BC7
- ...are minimum 2K; optional 4K file available
- ...are significantly more detailed vs vanilla
Future Plans
Although it's too early to finalize our plans, we anticipate that this mod will eventually encompass the same breadth as Realistic Water Two does for Skyrim. This means we aim to introduce custom effects, meshes, particles, various water features, waterTypes, and more.
Our capabilities are currently limited to texture editing until all the modding tools are made available, but we intend to continually expand and update these textures until that time. We have already extracted over 100 water-related files from the game, so users can look forward to a more realistic water experience in Starfield.
Please note that the plans outlined above are tentative and subject to change as we are still in the early stages of modding and getting acquainted with this new game!
Prerequisites
- First, download and install BethINI Pie. Manual INI tweaking is not supported!
- Run it, selecting the option to "Load Loose Files". This is required to be able to load and use loose files from mods!
- Optional but recommended, disable the Message of the Day by unselecting the option that is next to the Loose Files option.
- Finish setting the desired options then save and close (File > Save).
Root Data Directory
The game's root Data directory may be used, however, please be aware of the issues regarding its use. If you are not, please do your research and learn what the current situation is. If the Message of the Day is disabled, users should be fine as long as nothing is installed to the My Games location. If using the game's Data directory for modding, be advised do not use Photo Mode to capture images!
Manual Installation
While we are aware of the circumstances, the modding community is eagerly awaiting updates from Bethesda (like official mod support) and decisions made by mod manager developers. Until a more definitive installation process is established, we recommend placing the mod files in the following location:
- GamePass Users: ..\Documents\My Games\Starfield\Data
- Steam Users: ..\Steam\steamapps\common\Starfield\Data
Mod Organizer 2
There is currently no official MO support for Starfield, and MO does not support the GamePass version because their virtual file system can not support it. There is, however, two options for MO users until official support is out:
- Use the base support provided by Kelthrayden: Starfield Plugin for Mod Organizer 2
- Use the beta version of MO, which is available via their Discord.
Vortex
- Vortex supports Starfield as of Hotfix Update 2023-09-22 20:48 GMT.
- Vortex does support the GamePass version, but be aware some mods are do not; like SFSE.
- Users can use Photo Mode since Vortex is taking care of the issues surrounding its use.
