What is this mod?
The Research system in Starfield in most circumstances may as well not exist, as the very small resource requirements needed to progress and complete research projects is laughably small, and completely undermined by an excessively frequently triggered 'Breakthrough' system. Indeed, the actual resource input required to progress is so small as to practically never need the player to do anything more than pick up items during quests and buy small amounts of (extremely cheap) resources from general vendors.

The purpose of this mod is to re-work research projects to be significant obstacles requiring front-heavy investment before being able to unlock recipes, such that not only does research provide a relevant and more challenging gameplay system that helps pace the player's progression and meaningfully require some cost investment, but also starts to require the player to actually harvest resources planet-side and with outposts to have a big enough supply to practically be able to progress research and unlock crafting options, especially at higher levels. It also may make taking a few levels in Research Methods worthwhile - in vanilla this is a totally worthless perk since the resource costs are already so low.

To this end, Research Redone significantly increases the resource cost of Research projects so as to rebalance research to be a worthwhile and challenging gameplay system. The increase in resource costs are made in an intelligent way - instead of inflating all resource costs the same amount across the board, it takes into account the rarity of different ingredients so not as to either over-inflate costs of much rarer resources or under-increase the cost of common resources.

How does this mod actually change Research?
This mod doesn't change the types of ingredients required for a given project, but increases the amount of ingredients required by each research project. The size of the increase, however, differs in magnitude depending on the rarity of the ingredient. Detailed breakdown of how the ingredient costs are scaled (as a multiple of vanilla cost) is included below:

Resource Costs:
  • Common resources: x10
  • Uncommon resources: x5
  • Rare resources: x3
  • Exotic resources: x2
  • Unique resources: x1.5

Manufactured Item Costs:
  • Tier I (Common/Uncommon): x3
  • Tier II (Rare/Exotic): x2
  • Tier III (Unique): x1.5

Aid Item Costs:
  • Basic Meds/Chems: 3x
  • Advanced Meds/Chems, Food/Drink items: 2x
  • Rare/special Meds/Chems: 1.5x

What requirements are there for this mod?
Plugins.txt Enabler - Research Redone uses an .esm plugin file, so unless you already know how to manually force enable an esm via your config files it is recommended to use the Plugins.txt Enabler (+- Vortex or a mod manager of your choosing)

Is this compatible with other mods?
Research Redone should be fully compatible with practically anything and everything that does not change the vanilla research projects in any way.

How do I install this mod?
Download and install via Vortex or other Nexus-compatible mod manager, and enable the ResearchRedone.esm plugin via your mod manager of choice or by manually adding ResearchRedone.esm to your load order in Plugins.txt.

Alternatively if downloading directly, unpack and add ResearchRedone.esm to your game Data directory and enable this by adding it to your load order in Plugins.txt manually (or by using your Mod Manager of choice if you are using one for the plugin management in spite of manual installation).

How do I uninstall this mod?
Remove the esm from your load order (disable in your mod manager or manually remove from plugins.txt) and delete ResearchRedone.esm from your data directory. This should result in immediate reversion to vanilla state in-game on next play-through without any need for any more specific uninstallation steps.
