The Alterra Corporation may be known for their monopoly of the weapons trade during The Expansion, but what they desire more than profit is control. Control of the weapons markets, control of their devoted employees, control of the very environments in which they operate.
Ever on the lookout for opportunity, Alterra executives devised a secret mission: the scientific crew of the Aurora were to tame and weaponize the native creatures of 4546B. These innocent beasts were to be transformed into formidable weapons, ready to march into battle as foot soldiers of the highest bidder.
However, fate had different plans. The Aurora met a tragic demise, thwarting the realization of this ambitious goal. In the explosive aftermath, strewn across the wreckage of the stricken vessel, cloning equipment lies broken, the mission unfufilled.
Ever enterprising, you see not waste but untapped potential. While these creatures may be useless as weapons to you, they hold the promise of companionship and hope in troubled times.

Installation
IMPORTANT: You must uninstall earlier versions of subnautica pets and subnautica pets bz! These mods are not compatible with this mod and may cause problems and conflicts.
It is recommended that you use the "Kill All" feature of these earlier mods to remove all legacy pets before uninstalling!
This mod uses Bepinex and Nautilus. You must install these to use this mod. The mod supports Vortex, but you must use the latest version of Vortext and the Subnautica Support extension.
To install the mod:
- Download and install the BepInEx Pack for Subnautica.
- Download and install Nautilus. The mod requires a MINIMUM of Nautilus 1.0.0pre.35, released February 2025.
- Download the Pets mod ZIP file.
- Unzip the file to a folder.
- Copy the folder to your <GAME>\BepInEx\plugins folder.
REALLY IMPORTANT! Because the mod spawns new collectible resources, you must start the mod in a new game. I'm really sorry, but this is a limitation of the Subnautica spawning system, where resources are spawned and persisted during gameplay.
User Guide
With this new Subnautica Pets mod, I've rebuilt from the ground up intending to introduce "lore-friendly" gameplay around the “Pets” concept. With this in mind, this mod is ideally played "as is", with discovery playing a part in getting the most out of the mod. As such, I recommend you play the mod in "Adventure" mode! When it comes to collecting resources, don't forget the Scanner Room and Scanner Room Chip - scanning for resources is your friend!
That said, if you're in the end game and just want to enjoy having some beasties running around your base, you can enable "Creative" mode in the mod options to unlock everything. All you need then is titanium, and you can explore all the mod has to offer. Switching modes requires a restart of the game, but can be done mid save.
Note that "Custom Pets" don't required DNA, and are not a part of the "Adventure" lore friendly experience.
Unlike previous versions, there are no other “mod options” or keyboard shortcuts. All mod functionality is built into the game.
Spoilers
This new version of the Pets mod has been created in a way to make the experience more "organic", with discovery and task/reward focussed gameplay, rather than "instant access" to pets. If you want to get straight to spawning Pets, you can find spoilers on how it all works here or simply enable "Creative" mode, save, quit, re-load, and enjoy!
