To investigate the death of your sister, you used skills and cunning to get a position at Alterra's research outpost on planet 4546B.
You barely have time to settle in when a deadly meteor storm triggers a general evacuation to the nearby Vesper station.
This evacuation could be the perfect opportunity to proceed freely with your investigation, so you decide to hide in a nearby cave while everybody is leaving.
The meteor storm is way more brutal than expected and you get knocked out by some falling rocks in the cave.
When you wake up, you realize, with horror, that the space station is nowhere to be seen and has, in all likelihood, been destroyed.
You are now trapped on 4546B until Alterra can send a rescue mission, which could take months or years if they are convinced that nobody survived down there, or until you find your own way out of there.

Side note:
Because of the backstory you start at night (kind of make the flare actually useful!) with half your health (because of the meteor storm). Explore the surrounding area to find food and water, just like in the vanilla start area.
How to use (just in case):
unzip in your below zero save folder. should look something like that if you own the steam version:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\SubnauticaZero\SNAppData\SavedGames
