Tell us a little about yourself, Kurtis!
Well, I’ve been using Nexus Mods since about 2008 and so have been modding and gaming for quite a while! I’ve previously been working in mostly science-based roles but made the switch to Nexus Mods when I saw the opportunity. My main hobby is of course gaming, but outside of this, I like to play guitar (badly), try and keep my plants alive and try to spend time with my friends over in Europe as often as possible.
What made you decide to apply to work here at the Nexus?
I was honestly surprised when I saw that Nexus was based in the UK! When I saw the opportunity come up I knew I had to apply. Being able to combine my hobby with a new career in a company that I know and have used for years just made sense to me and wasn’t something I could turn down. When I received the offer I was ecstatic as I finally felt I had found a role I would be comfortable in, especially as “gaming” isn’t really accepted as a hobby in most other workplaces!
What about your gaming background? Have you done much modding?
I’ve been gaming for as long as I can remember. Honestly, it doesn't even matter what genre, although my favourites are usually FPS games and 4Xs like the Total War series (especially the Warhammer ones) or RPGs like Baldur’s Gate 3. But I actually think the majority of games I play are indie games such as Dave the Diver, Lethal Company, Rimworld, Cult of the Lamb and Ultrakill. I’ve been modding games (mostly Bethesda) since Elder Scrolls Oblivion, with the first mod I ever downloaded being the Hilarity mod for those random spells. Usually, though, I like to add texture mods and ENBs like Qarls Texture Pack III and Natural Environments, or overhauls of systems like Horizon for Fallout 4.
Do you have any favourite mods?
I think one of my favourite mods has been the Sim Settlements mod for Fallout 4. I really like city builders such as Cities: Skylines, Tropico and Manor Lords, and building little self-managing towns all over the wasteland just scratched that itch for a Fallout-themed version of that. Of course, Seamless Co-op for Elden Ring has been great fun with friends!
What will your work here at Nexus Mods involve?
My role will be in customer support, where I will be handling our community support system, dealing with any issues that our users have, and trying to get our inbox response times down so that your problems can be dealt with faster.
What are you playing at the moment? Are there any upcoming games that you're looking forward to?
At the moment I’m of course playing the Elden Ring DLC: Shadow of the Erdtree! I’m taking my time with it and definitely not getting stuck on crazy hard bosses and nearly smashing my controller… As a strength/faith build, I refuse to alter my playstyle and will beat the game by brute force! I’ve also recently picked up Icarus which has been on my radar for a while as a survival crafting fan. I like the unique approach it's taken towards levelling and unlocking gear, a sort of hybrid survival crafter/extraction shooter (minus the shooting), but it can be a bit grindy. For the upcoming games, I’m looking forward to Doom: The Dark Ages, Monster Hunter: Wilds and GTA 6, cautiously watching STALKER 2, and keeping an eye out for quite a few indie games with no solid release window such as RetroSpace and The Forever Winter.
Any final thoughts?
No thoughts, head empty.
We wish you the best of luck in your new role, Kurtis, and look forward to seeing what you get up to in our team!
